Damn, us Brits are going to have to wait until Prince Charles takes over before we can have a picture of a big nob on our coins!

Hehe, good point.

Always thought it was a silly thing to only include countries that are members of the EU - it's a friggin' map, you don't just cut out countries! Never noticed that Sweden and Finland together make for such a great phallos. And they call us pervs! Pah!

I never noticed that... all that time there and never noticed... or, actually, didn't care. In the old Belgium currency, I remember seeing a naked or topless guy/woman in a beach scene. Okay, I don't remember apparently, so never mind, that was 9 years ago. Wow!

Also, notice how Switzerland has been conspicuously carved out of Europe. I understand why they do this, but it makes the map look pretty bad.

I'm just amazed Americans can recognise Europe on a coin.
Will you be voting in liars and murderers come May 5th? The US screwed up by voting in their very own little genocidal maniac. Will you? If Labour's own members are in disarray about the Iraq war, what does that tell you?

Back before 1809, Sweden and Finland were one country and maps were shoddier. Then maps became more accurate and Sweden decided they wanted to swap Finland for Norway. Two houndred years later, Norwegians are once again laughing.

Deny it all you want, but it's the truth.

Try spending a Euro or a Loonie in any country outside it's origin.

Then offer them a USD at the same time and see what they want.

I personally like the US coins, I think the people and landmarks on them are much more diverse and detailed compared to the Euro or British s and p, just look at all the backs of the new quarters or the back of our penny, or even the new nickle. With that said I really think we should make $1 and $2 coins, I really found the 1 and 2 coins convenient when I was living in London. I know there is the sackajawaya (sp?) dollar coin, but I hardly ever see those anywhere now a days...we need a coin that people actually want to use too, I don't think any Americans care to use the sackajawaya(sp?) coin...

Because it's a well known fact you went all around the world and didn't stay in your small, GM factory powered Midwest town.

besides, the currency markets clearly shows that people prefer EU over USD.

For all all of you people claiming that because the Euro has increased in value against the USD means that it is in greater demand in more countries are simply fooling yourself.

I offer a challenge: To anyone living in a country that isn't home to either the Euro or the USD ask one of your fellow country men if they would rather have a US twenty dollar bill or the equivalent in Euros.

And then ask them what a loonie or toonie is.

I live in a country that's home to neither Euro nor USD, and here the Euro is more 'popular'.

In China, it's the other way around: The Dollar is the most popular thing (more popular than their own Yuan, even), but that is partly due to the government's policies surrounding the Yuan, and the fact that the Yuan is tied to the Dollar, not the Euro.

And then ask them what a loonie or toonie is.
I asked myself, and I didn't know. Sounds like something to do with Bugs Bunny...

Lots of other countries take the dollar:

1. Mexico
2. Kazakhstan

Plus many more!

From which you would deduct what exactly?

That a lot of people aren't up to date when it comes to currency exchange rates? That a currency that's not even a handful of years old doesn't have the same "brand recognition" as the greenback?

I sure hope you don't apply the same kind of logic when working in that car factory of yours.

And if you really want to state something of value regarding this topic you might want to read up on recent developments where more and more folks are thinking/talking about switching the trade of crude oil from USD to EUR before getting all "patriotic". Wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts? (not that I personally believe this is going to happen anytime soon)

Oh yeah - "patriotic" in quotes because, at least from here (as opposed to "there"), you don't seem to be doing your country a favor. Every time one of "those" topics comes up you remind me of some nutter, standing on top of his wooden crate in a public park, his fingers firmly stuck in his ears, screaming:
  • "LALALALALA ... I CAN'T HEAR YOU .... LALALA ... WE'RE THE SHIZNIT ... LALALALA ... YOU'RE ALL WRONG!!!1!!".
And then you get all tense and stuff. Every time. Like one of Pawlow's doggies.

So I'm still curious - how many countries have you traveled to since the introduction of the Euro?

You know what is an even bigger concern to me is the Asian central banks reducing the percentage of their foreign currency reserves in the dollar. Both Japan and South Korea have talked about doing this and anecdotal evidence--percentage of increase or decrease in foregin currency holdings denominated in US dollars--suggests both countries are making small, incremental decreases to their holdings of US dollars.

If they ever decide to make a radical change--and that would only need to be a 5-10% decrease in their holdings of dollars--we would be screwed. Other countries are NOT picking up the slack and increasing their holdings and not too many new countries are coming on board investing in US dollars. Less foreign countries buying dollars means the trade deficit would grow rapidly which is NOT a good thing.

PS--Kilbey, how many countries have you traveled to since the introduction of the Euro?

I'm not being patriotic, I am being realistic.

It's not my car factory silly. It's GM's. They simple hand me a wonderful paycheck each week!

Deny it all you want or rationalize it all you want, but the USD is more popular than the Euro. No matter what the reasons.

That's why I love you - you truly are the bomb!!

Btw, cutie pie - I haven't denied and/or confirmed anything. In my first post I was curious as where you got your bold statement from - "How many other countries ..." as in: "Does he actually know or does he watch too much television?". And in my second post I was amused by your fabulously well thought-out "challenge".

There's no denying anything because I couldn't give two shits as to whether the Dollar or the Euro is more "popular". My favorite currency in the whole wide world is the Danish Kroner (sic?).

Because they have a 25 Ore coin which has a hole in the center - and that is the shit. Money on a string/stick - perfect. Compared to that little beauty, you can take any Cent coin, be it from the US or Europe, and shove it.

But then again - a true cosmopolitan like yourself already knew that, right?

I would personally take the Euros over the USD. The USD has been in a near free-fall in value for the past 6 months, and in a slow but sure decline before that. Where I live EUR and USD are equally useful, but of course local currency is what I use every day.

Hum hum... you're just a tiny little bit out of the loop there, though...

We haven't had those 25 re coins with holes in them since sometime in 1989. Since then, we've had very small copper coins without holes for the 25 re piece.

However, since 1993, we've had some new 1, 2 and 5 kroner coins, which are all nice and silvery and have holes, which also means that we have those silly Norwegians beat easily with our no less than three different perforated coins. You can see them all here.

I think you need to visit this country again, it's been too long.

(Oh, since you asked - since you said that your favourite is [singular] the Danish, it should be krone, not kroner, which is the plural form. re is the same in singular and plural.)
