My brother just bought his wife a emac, and wants to buy a Plextor PX-780UF DVD to make DVDs, and I want to make sure he can burn natively without using Toast. The web site is naturally obscure about this. Does anyone know? I really don't want to see him have a negative experience...

Take a look at the Drive Compatibility Database over at Accelerate Your Mac. It should let you know if the drive works or not.

Hmm. No info there. I wonder if it is just so new. I thought I might look around at apple.com, but I cannot find the list they usually maintain. Can anyone provide a link?
