iPod backup files stored where?

Hello macnn....it's been a while. Does anyone know where your mac keeps the backup files (and how many copies) for you iTouch? I recently had mine replaced and right this minute I am restoring it. I got a message saying my macbook didn't have enough room to keep a backup copy. I thought that bizzare. I know it is a fact I do not have a lot of space left on my macbook but, I had not run into this problem before. I'll take any help I can get. Thank you!
