What programs are available to mask/hide ones IP address while surfing the web? So that if someone was to trace my IP..... either nothing would show up or the wrong address would show up.

Any suggestions?

They're only randomly using yours if you've set up a tor server, which you're not going to do by accident:

A good number of web sites have already blocked tor users including Slashdot.

Just download Privoxy and be over with it.

Note that you'll need to tweak your rules a bit since out of the box it can be quite overzealous.

There's also NetShade which has a very nice UI and works seamlessly with Mac OS X-native browsers (i.e. Camino, Safari). Because FireFox is Java-based (I think), it does not utilize the System Preference Panel that's altered when you launch NetShade and therefore you must configure FireFox to manually use NetShade's proxy server. Now that I think about it FireFox users may never need to launch NetShade for that very reason. I can't test this because I'm using my work Windows box.

At any rate, it provides complete anonymity with the NetShade proxy server and no noticeable speed drops.

Length of usage: 4 months
