There seem to be a dozen products on the market for manipulating PDFs, but I haven't found one that provides bookmark editing.

What I need to do is:
Output .pdf from a number of sources (print dialog does this)
Combine them (CombinePDF is nice)
Label what the pages are using bookmarks, or some other good choice of labeling method.

Anyone have a tool for this?

I thought I'd found the solution with Preview's Bookmarks: Add Bookmark command. But for some reason I can't figure out, those bookmarks won't travel with the .pdf when someone else opens it, so it's useless to me.
OS X: Where software installation doesn't require wizards with shields.

Acrobat does this of course. If you stick the PDFs together using MergePDF the generated PDF has the filenames of the original PDFs as bookmarks in the final version, but I'm not quite sure this is what you want.

Is there a way to add authors and title so I can search scanned scientific articles with Spotlight?
Is there another way to do this other than Acrobat?

Yes, Acrobat of course. I didn't mention that my goal was to edit the bookmarks without buying a copy of Acrobat. It's hard to justify the price when we need a tool to accomplish one task, not everything the acrobat suite does.

Yeah, same for me, actually.
I don't need Acrobat to create pdfs, that's what pdflatex is for
So does anybody know of alternatives?
