Well, after living long past what most expected, my cat best friend passed away. Tigger had been fighting cancer for some time but it was finally too much for him to bear, so I had the vet ease him to sleep earlier today. I was determined not to let him suffer, and the last week had taken it's toll on him. It was one of the toughest things I've ever done, but I rubbed him and whispered in his ear while they gave him the shot, and held him while he went peacefully.

We fought several tough illnesses together, both his and mine. I wish we could have had one more Win in that column, but I can't help but be thankful for almost 13 years together. He's always known how much I love him.

G'bye bud, you're the best. Catch you on the next turn.

I am so sorry. I still tear up thinking about having to put my ol cat, Uno to sleep. He was only 7 but had a sever case of diabetes that was going to be "incurable." It was the worst day and week of my life.

I am so sorry for your loss, but it's great that he did not suffer.

Sorry for your loss.

My cat Shadow is 13 this year, I hope I don't have to go through this anytime soon.

She seems to be healthy other than some arthritis in her hip.

I had a cat that lived to 19, she got quite senile, confused and couldn't cope in the end, that was a sad day.

Aww damn.

My cat Mash had cancer and in the end we had her put to sleep. She just couldn't cope anymore and was in almost constant pain. Last thing she did was crawl on my lap.

I feel your pain, I lost my cat a few years ago. Died in my arms too.

RIP Tigger.

Bye Tigger . I feel very lucky that I had mine put asleep after reaching 20 years old, now some 8 years ago. It now hurts again.
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

My deepest sympathies for you, but I'm happy that you guys got to enjoy those years together.

I grew up with a cat named Tigger, and still think about him often, as he was one of my best friends growing up. At 18, his kidneys gave out, and so I went through the last trip to the vet. A truly awful experience, yet one I cherish, because it was the last time I got to hold him and talk to him.

My girlfriend and I had to put our cat Squeacks to sleep as well. He had heart problems that had gone untreated for a long time. Certain people didn't bother taking him to the vet for years.

Cats are great companions. You've got my sympathies -- I know how it feels realizing he won't be there in the morning. :-(

Not really a cat person, but we had a cocker spaniel die from cancer. She was only 8 years old. It was tough...I feel for you.

I feel for you. I still have pictures of my cats that died 2 and 3 years ago respectively on my night stand. They were around 20, so they had a long and good life.

I understand, all day I've been spontaneously crying. One moment I'll be fine, then without notice the waterworks start up. Was so wrong to walk into the house tonight and not have him waiting for me in the kitchen (usually demanding a treat). The girls are just beside themselves over it and our second cat is wandering around the house, from room to room, calling for him. It just breaks my heart.

That breaks MY heart! I'mso sorry. My dogs are 12 and 13. So, it's been a while since I put one down. But, it will come soon. The cats are 1 1/2 and 1. I can't imagine the dynamic change of the "pack". Give the girls and the other cat special attention.

Yeah, our other cat isn't very bright (but she's really cute), I expect that this could go on for weeks. She worshipped him, it's as if her god disappeared and there's no one to ambush her at every corner. Seriously, many times I watched him prep a spot and wait for her for half an hour, just to get a good pounce.

We had to have one of our dogs put down on Memorial Day. (We've had a death on Thanksgiving, a near death (bloat) on Memorial Day, and now a death on Memorial Day.) We don't look forward to holidays.

The other night I fired up the "dogs" album on the TV (which now includes pictures of 3 we've lost) and we watched the slideshow. The wife did fine, but I couldn't stop the tears.

I feel your pain, but I assure you that the other cats will snap back; probably better than you will.

Possibly. But I absolutely HATE cats and really couldn't care for them. And I am also hoping that someone here has a sick and twisted sense of humor and will chuckle at the irony of the picture in such a thread.

I also think that it is a bit much to post something on the internet and not expect a degrading comment to come from some pompous phlegmatic prick. (Read: me)

I shed a tear when I read this thread. I can't stand cats dying. Stuff like this moves me more than people dying. I had a cat die from bone cancer, we had to put her down (her entire jaw was black one day).

sorry for your loss

Here, I shall try to make up for the insensitive ******* up there.

In all seriousness, I’m not sure what I’m going to to when one of them passes away in the far future.
Not being greeted when I come home. I imagine it’ll be almost like a family member passing away, although this will sound terribly stupid to people that don’t actually own a pet.

At least he didn’t suffer, having a random person run over your pet with a car must be even worse.

One of our cats died that way. He was hit somewhere during the evening/night. He was still alive but he ran away to die somewhere in the woods around here.
At least the guy had the decency to run down to the vet (right across the street from us) and report that he hit a small black/grey cat. A lot of people barely brake for animals.

I probably couldn't live with myself if I were to run over someone's cat. I once ran over a squirrel. I was somewhat in shock.

Well, I have one more on this machine... let me finds it.

This was about 5 years ago when he was at his largest, somewhere around 23 lbs. He went on a diet soon after.

Man, I'm the same about Uno. He's only been gone a couple of years, but when I posted that pic of him above, that's the first time I've been able to browse the "Pets" section of my Flickr page. I'm just now able to really say his name and talk about him -- but if I spend any length of time thinking about him, I choke-up.

Man, pets are awesome -- but I hate losing them.

Not to make this about my cat, but to post happy picture memories, here are a couple of Uno being his typical self:

Very sorry about your loss.

We lost our Phaedra 3 years ago in October.

And to this day, it's still far too quiet in the kitchen when we cook chicken (her favorite human food).
