I've become frustrated with Safari's continual beachballing (v1.3 on 10.3.9). So I've been investigating other browsers, including Opera and Omniweb. I like both of them. But they cost money. In fact I almost bought Opera yesterday. But I'm a poor student and don't really need the browser. Someone please dissuade me/convince me its worth the 4 pints it costs!

Upgrade to Tiger if you are going to spend money. Safari 2.0 is more stable than 1.3. Faster too.

As far as the beachballing, have you trashed the plist? Emptied your cache? Emptied your flavicons? Edited down your Autofill > Others and turned it off?

If displeased with Safari, try FireFox. I think it's better on the PC side and it's a step down from Safari but it is solid, it does work, it is free and it's already been ported to the Mactels.

I haven't tried FireFox on my iBook, but I run Netscape 7.2 all the time with no problems. And it's free.

What in the world does that mean?

Oh, and there's absolutely no reason to run Netscape over Mozilla. If I were you I'd ditch that POS right away.

It sounds to me you're just being picky. If you want it, buy it. If not, then use Firefox or stick with Safari. How complicated is that?

Stay away from Opera. It cant render tables for crap... you'll have things flying all over the place. There was actually once an argument here on the forums about whos fault that is, but lets not have that again please... I use firefox becaue of its ease of use, extensibility, and physical resemblance to Safari. The downsides are that you wont get cool Aqua buttons inside web forms, and it doesnt 100% adhere to the Apple HI Guidelines. But its fine...

1.3 on 10.3.9 was terrific for me as well, and 2.0 is even better.

Try Shiira - http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/index-e.html

It just might "do it" for you. And it's free.

Believe me I've tried them all and Safari is still the best even though it can't handle JavaScript worth a lick. I'm using 1.3 (v312) on 10.3.9. Sloooooow brower. Each of the others has problems too; IMO worse than Safari. For example, try typing a repsonse on MacNN with Camino

On another note, now that I've upgraded to QT 7 I get incredibly frustrating beachballing when trying to play certain mpegs ...

Keep in mind that OmniWeb, while shareware, has an exceedingly generous trial period. It can be launched on thirty different days, so if you launch it and don't quit or restart often, you can easily get several months if not a year or more out of it. Plus the occasional nags it throws at you are actually pretty amusing.

I bought it. Its implementation of tabs and its ability to set preferences on a per-site basis alone are worth the price of entry.

Thanks for the opinions.

You see what I was looking for (and communicated really badly) was someone to come out and say why I shouldn't get such and such a browser (thanks for the info on opera re: tables - useful). However, I appreciate the comments. OW is a very good looking program and it might well get bought at some point. however, on reflection and reading of the opinions I think I'm going to keep fiddling away with safari, camino and firefox.

Thanks anyway!
