Mouse cursor jumps to odd parts of screen

I have a iMac G5 1.6, 17" and when using any mouse I attach to it (stock mouse, stark msft mouse, other usb mice, etc) sometimes I'll be scrolling across or just sitting my mouse still (it uses a mouse pad too) and my cursor will fly to a different part of the screen. Its mildly annoying but shouldn't happen...Anyone else have this problem?

My Microsoft Optical mouse does that when using a mouse mat. I think it get's confused with all of the patterns and colours on it.
Try just using it on your desk and see what happens.
You don't really need a mouse mat for optical mice anyway.

I've tried it on both desk and mouse mat.. perhaps I need a mouse mat that is a plain color? My desk is wood and has patterns too...

Hmm
Try using it on a plain piece of cardboard.
What mouse do you use, maybe it's faulty? If you are using an Apple mouse then this may be a good excuse to buy a new mouse with a scroll wheel to see if it solves the problems.

I get the same problem with the original mac mouse that came with the G5 iMac and with the Microsoft Stark Mouse. BTW, The MS mouse is awesome, its the one with the super cool blue light down the center. Very sweet looking and feeling. Great scroll wheel, and yay! it has two buttons!

I had this problem with my old Microsoft generation 1 Intellimouse Explorer (Optical) towards the end of its run (Still works though. Just replaced.) and once in a while on my Logitech MX1000. But not so much as it used to. I always blamed it on too much stuff hogging the processor. Is that possible?

I put down a white piece of copy paper, and shazam, no skipping hopping or quantum leaps for the mouse cursor yet....Guess the wood pattern and the crazy rainbow type colors on the mousepad were too much..

I'm using the S+ark mouse too and it does it sometimes.
Can't say enough about that mouse though..$14 and its freaking awsome

Do you have a cat? The hairs my cat looses are causing this behavior if one is cought under the sensor.
