Here’s a bit of a puzzler. My wife is very,
very active on a particular forums-based site—not MacNN, but running the same software, etc.—and is constantly getting e-mail updates about threads she’s subscribed to. We’re talking “Topic Reply Notification” e-mails up the wazoo here.
Since she uses Safari as her default browser, she’s got the preference set to “Open links from applications in a new tab in the current window.” This at least prevents Mail links from spawning new windows willy-nilly, but it does leave her with large numbers of tabs. Then every once in a while, she actually
wants to open a new window, so now the old window, still full of tabs, is running in the background and the new tabs start popping up in the new window. After a few days without restarting the iBook (or at least without quitting Safari), it’s not uncommon for her to have hundreds of tabs spread over a half-dozen windows, with obvious performance hits. I’ve upgraded the iBook to 1.125GB—the max it’ll take—but she’s still quite easily using it all, even as the only user logged in (and every once in a while, she doesn’t even have that going for her).
So here’s the question: given her browsing style, she would like an option to “Open links from applications in
the same tab in the same window.” (Don’t ask why she doesn’t just close the previous tab; it’s not nice to ask a pregnant woman questions like that.)
Is there anything out there that would allow her to have that setting? A shell command? A haxie? Anything?
Thanks in advance!
