Hi there

I've got a 2yr old iPhone 3G 16gb and my current battery strength is 2% of its original meaning if i have a phone call for 10 min i loose about 1/2 its charge.
I went to apple and asked them about changing the battery and they said they do not do that... instead of charging me $70 for the battery replacement (as i've seen on the web) they want to charge me $200 for a replacement phone.....

I might just resort on going to ebay and purchasing a battery for $10 and risking my iPhone

AFAIK, Apple doesn't replace just the battery, since it's pretty much impossible to open up the device.

YouTube - How to change iPhone battery

But paying an extra $200 just for the battery is kind of an annoyance if you know what i mean

They won't even replace the battery under AppleCare? Or give you a refurb replacement?

Wasn't the original statement to allow $70 battery replacements, when people complained they couldn't do it at home?

What's the wording of the statements? I too thought I could just change the battery for $70.

Apple - Support - iPhone Out-of-warranty Battery Replacement Program

Unless this has been superseded by new policy, the above page says they'll do the battery replacement.

It's possible, just a PITA to put it all back together correctly.

Why do they know it's jailbroken?

Agreed.... almost sounds like the person at the Apple Store doesn't know what he's talking about.

Or it was obvious that the phone was jailbroken - either because he was told or because he had it in his hand.

Yes... however the OP hasn't stated that the phone is indeed jailbroken.

Can you do a factory reset once it's been jailbroken?

A new battery could mean a "new" refurbed iPhone - it's at Apple's discretion.

I don't understand what the problem is.. why does it matter if they give him a "new" refurb or his original.... hell, I'd want a refurb...I'm sure it'd be in better condition than my own.

Read the OP. It’s not just a matter of a replacement phone or a replacement battery for the same price. They’re saying they won’t replace the battery for the standard $69 price, but they’ll only replace the entire phone and charge him $199 for it.

If it is because they saw that it was jailbroken, he should be able to restore it, take it back to an Apple store again, and ask for the battery replacement. Even if the same Geniuses are working, they might not recognize him if it’s been a while and the store is busy.

The "battery replacement" program is a phone replacement.

Your phone is dumped into a large container with thousands of others and, a few weeks later, shipped to China for refurbishing. You get an identical, refurbished phone with a fresh battery - NOT your original phone.

This is the case for iPod battery replacement, as well.

It's probably how the iPad battery replacement will work.

This thread would've been much shorter if you would've told us that you brought in a jailbroken iPhone to the Apple Store. Its well known that Apple will not treat jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches the same as they treat un-jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches. Its also well known how Apple deals with battery "replacements"... they replace your device, not the battery.
