Hey,

I'm somewhat new to the fact that you can run a software update on a tv set. Should I do so? It feels adequate. We have a Samsung tv and I have a Philips tv. I wonder if it could break more than it could do well, after all, 'never break a running system'...

I have some problems with the Philips tv, it crashes sometimes. Could a software update help?

Greetings,
PeteParker

I had a Phillips TV that I bought in 2009 that died on me, but was revived by installing an update via USB stick.

If everything's working fine, I'd be hesitant to install an update that doesn't add necessary features.

Of course, this comes from someone that installs significant iOS and OS X updates on day 1 for no good reason.

Yep, I do that, as well as updating my Blu-Ray box. Since my HDTV is a "smart TV" with a number of apps that I actually use, it makes sense to me to update it when new firmware comes out. Likewise, Blu-Ray players need updates because technology on newer discs tends to require new tricks in software. And my Blu-Ray box is also "smart," so I update it for its apps as well.

Usual they add or improve smart features, like updates to the Netflix and Amazon apps, not likely anything that will do harm.
