Is it just me, or is Apple PowerMac product line really messed up. Check this out:

$1,699.00 - 466MHz
$2,199.00 - 533MHz
$2,499.00 - Dual 533MHz
$2,799.00 - 667MHz
$2,999.00 - 733MHz
$3,499.00 - 733MHz (SuperDrive)

Isn't it absolutely nuts that the single 667 costs more than a Dual-533?!

What the hell are they going to do when they introduce the Dual-667 & Dual-733?
Oh yeah, $1500 for duals, $3000 for the single CPU models!

Also, the 466 model is really embarrasing. It's time we got over 500mhz on all models, eh.

This makes more sense (without changing prices):

$1,699.00 - 667MHz
$2,199.00 - 733MHz
$2,499.00 - Dual - 533MHz
$2,799.00 - Dual 667MHz
$2,999.00 - Dual - 733MHz
$3,499.00 - Dual -733MHz (SuperDrive)

Or am I just nuts?!

I like your thinking, but there is one problem... I think from a marketing standpoint, Apple is hesitant to make a lower Mhz processor more expensive than a faster processor, even in a dual configuration. Most informed users would prefer a dual 533 over a single 667, but the average user would probably pick the single 667.

I agree. If most people can't get their brains around the MHz misconception (I like to think of 1.5 Mhz PCs as Yugos with a Ferrari engine--just 'cause they have the power, doesn't mean they're equipped to use it), think what adding the subtlety of a mulitple processor willdo to muddy the waters....

I think that part of the problem now is that not a whole lot of software takes advantage of the dual processors -- including the Mac OS. Only a few specialized programs, such as photoshop, take advantage of the dual configuration.

Of course, OS X will change that, since it supports dual systems at the OS level.

However, as of right now, a single 667 Mhz system _is_ faster than a dual 533 for the majority of users for a majority of tasks.

I totally agree with you and your recommended product lineup -- and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's what we see once OS X ships as the installed OS in these machines. And hopefully by then we'll see a speedbump as well!
