2004 is over! List your most/least favorite movies from the past year and give reasons why.
Favorites from 2004:
Dawn of the Dead - More of a reimagining than a true remake and every bit as good as the original. A fun, tense, and energetic film. See the unrated version on DVD if you can.
The Machinist - Spooky drama that will keep you guessing, and an amazing performance by a gaunt Christian Bale.
Kill Bill Vol 2 - Tarintino's homage to spaghetti westerns and kung fu cinema. Action packed and entertaining.
Napoleon Dynamite - Quirky comedy full of entertaining characters and odd dialog. This movie was hard not to like.
Disappointments:
The Village - A quiet remote town spawns a movie that has no clear sense of what it wants to be. Was this horror? Was this a drama? I don't know what the genre was, but I thought the storytelling was awful throughout and the ending a huge disappointment.
Catwoman - Halle Berry in a cat suit, what could go wrong? Just about everything. Obvious CGI and mediocre performances made this almost unwatchable.

Didn't like The Village either.
I was also disappointed with Harry Potter 3

Favorites:
Spider-Man 2 - It lived up to the hype! Above all else, the movie captured the essence of Spider-Man and showed why he's the best character in comic-book history. As I expected, Doc Ock was a huge improvement over the Green Goblin.
Ray - This movie was a fitting tribute to an American legend. Jamie Foxx's performance deserves all the praise he gets (if not more).

Worst movies: Passion of the Christ
No matter what you thought of the movie, you'd think so too if you had seen parents sitting their 8 year old son down in front of the tv on Christmas eve to "experience how much Jesus loves" him. Folks, if you think child abuse is evil, that there is evil.
Also, though Fahrenheit 9/11 was manipulative piece of ferocious propaganda, however well-intentioned... not unlike the above.
***
Loved Eternal Sunshine and The Incredibles.
Also, if you haven't seen it, try to check out Born in the Brothels, a deeply moving documentary about the struggles and triumphs of children born to whores in India.

Agreed. I'd put Spider-Man 2 on the best list as pure enjoyment. Stepford Wives was horrible. Was that 2004 or late 2003? Either way, it sucked.

The parents are the idiots for putting an 8-year-old in front of the movie. How does this make the movie bad?
F-9/11 well intentioned? Absurd.

Add Fahrenhype 9/11 to my best movie list as well. It was well intentioned, and accurate.

Worst: Anything with Ben Stiller or Will Ferrell in it. These two idiots are not funny and essentially walk through lame movies that some asshole scriptwriter pulls out of his ass during a bout of diarrhea.
Best: Fahrenheit 9/11, Spiderman 2.
Passion of Christ was crucifixion pornography.

From an acting perspective.
Best:
Eternal Sunshine... - Who didn't love this? Jim Carrey's best performance to date.
Passion of the Christ - Jim Caviezel deserves the oscar for Best Actor.
Garden State - Natalie Portman comes of age, `nuff said.
F 9/11 - Moore is the best liar in the business and that's an important aspect of acting, right?
Worst:
Alexander - If I wanted to watch gay porn I'd just go rent Backdoor Boy VII. Colin Farrell really IS a better actor than this, honest. Hell, he did a better job in Daredevil.
Napoleon Dynamite - Ugh, after 20 minutes I fell asleep. I was told it got a little better after that... *yawn*

So how do you really feel. I have to admit to liking some of Will Ferrell's stuff, namely Old School. It was so dumb it was funny. I mainly liked him in SNL though, especially his Harry Caray skits.

I loved Garden State because it reminded me over and over of my own life (as I'm sure it does others also - it is an everyman kind of movie) and I loved Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Natalie Portman should be nominated for Best Actress for Garden State. The movie is brilliant.
Why Jim Carrey keeps getting passed over on the Oscar nods is baffling to me. He is exceptional no matter what he does.

Loved Ferrell on SNL but he seems to be following in Ben Stiller's lame footsteps as far as films go. I could write better comedy with half my brain tied behind my back.

We just rented Elf with Will Ferrell and it is truly idiotic.
Not funny in the least.
Bob Newhart has a cameo role and with his dry humor (with trademark eye blinking, of course), he is much funnier.
Will Ferrell = Lame humor.

One of the best films I've seen last year was Dig .
It's a documentary about the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. It's so bizarre at times I wondered half way through if it was for real or a mockumentary.
It centers on Anton Newcombe, the leader of the BJM; Let's say he has "issues" and it's sort of watching a train wreck as it happens.
Also the first time I've heard Dandy Warhols and I love their music.
Saw it on Sundance channel I think. Been looking for the DVD but no luck yet. Anyhow, I heartily recommend this if you ever come across it. Fun stuff.

Your ignoring everything else?
Like the Andy Kaufman movie he did? The Grinch. Liar Liar. Lemony Snicket. The Majestic. The Truman Show.
And of course, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
You cannot deny that the man is a comedic genius and his acting creds are established. He is truly a gifted actor and comedian.

I'm not ignoring anything. I was merely calling you on what you admit was an exaggeration.
FWIW, I haven't seen any of his movies except the two Ace Venturas, The Mask, and The Truman Show. He was very good in the last one, but nothing outstanding in the others. I'm also familiar with his work on In Living Color. He's not bad, but I certainly wouldn't call him a comedic genius.

Jim Carrey
Since you have seen only 3 of his 37 movies then perhaps you should reserve your judgement about his talent?
I have seen every single one of his movies that have been released. Some were okay, but others are brilliant. (Yes, I love watching Jim Carrey, I admit.)
Fun with Dick and Jane will probably earn him an Oscar nod -- if not, then they are fools over there in Oscar-land.

You better stop before you embarrass yourself. Carrey was brilliant in Eternal Sunshine and fully deserve an Oscar nod. I was never a fan of Carrey's until I saw him in that movie.
Anyway, I saw Hero and thought it was okay. Not the best nor the worst. Just okay. Tony Leung was awesome as per usual.
Troy, on the other hand, was one of the worst movies I've seen. The dialogue, the score, the lame CGI effects. Gah, awful.

Now you're being ridiculous (and you counted wrong). I did mistake a mistake, though: besides the four movies I've mentioned, I've also seen Dumb and Dumber, Batman Forever, The Cable Guy, and Me, Myself and Irene. Out of all those movies, the only really good performance was in The Truman Show. Again, I have nothing against Jim Carrey, but no, I don't think he's an undeniable comedic genius. All signs point to him being a better dramatic actor. AFAIC, he was brutally awful in The Mask and Me, Myself and Irene, but I don't deny that the material played a factor. At any rate, I certainly think I've paid enough money to see Jim Carrey's movies to judge his talent.

With all due respect, you've already embarrassed yourself by showing substandard reading-comprehension skills. I never said he didn't deserve an Oscar nomination for Eternal Sunshine; like I said, I've never seen it. For the life of me, I don't see at all what's embarrassing about an opinion of his talents that isn't anywhere near as low as the one you've had until recently.

That's not the wrong number. You said I'd seen 3 out of his 37 movies after I told you I'd seen "the two Ace Venturas, The Mask, and The Truman Show." That's four, which is why I put that number in bold later in the post.
On another note, I also liked I, Robot.
