Hi, I'm in the market for a MBP and plan to use it with BootCamp (and Parallels if they add 3d acceleration) for gaming, as I just sold my desktop gaming PC. I'm trying my patience right now waiting for Santa Rosa, mainly because it hasn't really been said whether to expect a new video card in the MBP (though I've read the MB's integrated graphics would be updated).

With that said, can anyone post any links to C2D MBP gaming benchmarks? If I was buying one today I'd get the $2499.99 15.4" model with the 256MB Radeon x1600. With the current BTO options, I wouldn't really change anything.

Some games I plan on running:
  • Any Star Wars game, especially KOTOR and Republic Commando, and the X-wing series
  • Doom 3 / Quake 4
  • FEAR
  • Falcon 4.0 (FF4, I was a developer in the FreeFalcon group)
  • Half-Life 2

No, nothing specific... I'm just looking for what kind of FPS to expect at what resolutions.

hmm i am running F.E.A.R AT 1024X768 i am getting very good speed with everything turned on. I know that i can run it higher.
i am running other games with no issues.
you will take a performance hit using Vista.
of course i am running XP through boot camp not parallels as gaming will not work there...

Well I won't be running Vista, there's not really any reason to, especially when XP has less overhead. I'll probably do like my current Parallels install, and install just XP and AVG Free antivirus (plus the BootCamp drivers, of course).

Looks like my purchase will be put off a while, though... last night someone cut open the roof of my 1993 Mustang convertible to break in. Fortunately it seems they didn't get anything out of it.

The good thing, though, is that even though this will put a MBP purchase back a few weeks, it helps with the patience issue while waiting for the Santa Rosa upgrade.

Half-Life 2 runs like a dream with the 128mb card, but it's an older game. I have yet to try BF2 or FEAR or anything else but I'll let you know when I do. I'm hoping for them to at least be playable on medium settings.

Company of Heroes, at full native res, runs wonderfully ... granted, I don't have all the options on like my GF800GTS has, but aside from that, it's really good.

I have CD 1.83 and 128MB 1600.

Those sound like good results... I'm not trying to run DX10 stuff.. most of my games a little bit older. Doesn't sound like I'll have much problems.

Any results using CrossOver Mac or VMWare (IIRC both support 3d acceleration)?

VMWare only supports DX8.1, so it's too old to be useful for what most would play these days, so I've never tried it.

If the game only uses DX8.1, VMWare Fusion is supposed to be pretty good - VMWare has done a great job at that, from what I've heard. Haven't tried it though - perhaps I need to.
