I have noticed the following error "lookupd[205]: Can't communicate with ypbind" repeated almost continuously in the syslog and console. should I be concerned and if so, how do I fix it/turn it off?

thanks

RTFM!!!

man lookupd <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

you can configure lookupd's resolution order via NetInfo.

I have:

/locations/lookupd/hosts
LookupOrder (CacheAgent, NIAgent, DNSAgent)

Notice, I don't have YPAgent.

This way, may resolution order will be cache, NetInfo (/machines), finally DNS.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

but what about the user who wants to bind to NIS?

i suggest binding Netinfo Domains to NIS domains for each subnet on the network...if you have that many boxes...IYKWIM
