Just got this Vizio TV ( Amazon.com: VIZIO E470VL 47-Inch 120 Hz 1080p LCD HDTV, Black: Electronics ) and DVR ( TV Everywhere - DISH Network ) combo installed, love it!

The Sling feature is pretty slick, can watch anywhere on PC or iPad. It was about time, our TV was a 20 year old 27" CRT. ;-)

The extra 360 lines will be wasted, as all broadcast HD is 720p, as is all online content.

Not true, most HD TV broadcasts are in 1080i.

Compressed 1080i. 720p through my AppleTV looks ten times better than the 1080i through my cable.

Dish and DirecTV have 1080P content. Almost all Blu-Ray movies are 1080P. Besides 1080P sets are now the rule not the exception.

But what percentage of your channels and programming are high fidelity 1080p?

Bluray is the only reason to get 1080p, yet no one is building a BD collection like some did with DVDs.

no one huh? my DVD collection was over 300...i'm close to that in blu.

sounds like someone is bitter they bought all 720P sets and now can't spend the money on 1080P sets

and for the record, i have:

3 x 1080P LCDs (living room, bedroom, game room)
1 x 720P projector (theater)

and blu/cable hooked to them all.

So he should have looked harder to find a 47" 720p set, if that's even sold any more?

I have 1 720p projector and that's it.
Not missing the 360 lines because all my sources are 720p (TV, PC). The occasional Bluray looks just as well.

So what? That doesn't mean you have to shit all over someone's new purchase just because you don't use 1080p.

I am not defecating over anything. I was just showing my view of de-facto video availability.

Millions of people are cutting the cable and using that $100/month in other things.

I have over-the-air digital TV, it's enough. If there are any shows I missed, I can stream it online. Cable TV is pointless and too expensive to have to watch commercials.

Enjoy your 1080p set, if anything you're future proofing. Well, at least until they change HDCP or something, then they'll force you to buy a new TV and Blu-Ray player.

Blu-Ray is not the only reason to get 1080P. The smaller pixel structure allows you to sit closer the the same size screen without seeing the pixels.

I do agree that the quality of compression has much more to do with the quality of the video than the resolution. Blu-Ray will be better because it has higher limits on bandwidth than cable or satellite. 1080P, 1080i, and 720P use roughly the same bandwidth so there's no reason 1080P is going to look radically better or worse than any other source. 1080P also has the advantage of matching the frame rate for film based material.

There are plenty of people collecting blu-ray. But I also think in the long run this is the last dance for physical media (definitely for spinning shiny discs).

Where do you even find a 720p TV? Not to mention why not have the highest available so down the line when bandwidth increases you'll be able to enjoy the new 1080p?

Getting a 720p Projector makes more sense because there is a rather sharp increase in price when you jump up to 1080p, with modern HDTVs the prices are so low it seems kind of ridiculous to look exclusively for a 720p set.

Ha, I couldn't disagree more. There virtually nothing on network tv worth watching compared to cable.

Community.

You can find 780p if you're shopping the cheap LCD brands, it's still semi-common with Plasma sets, too.

Poorly utilized absolutes and personal experiences aside, blu-ray has not seen the sort of widespread adoption dvds have.

No, I think it's dead.

Picked up a 42" Panasonic P42S2 plasma over the summer and haven't looked back. I debated the difference between a 720p Samsung and this set -- the Panny won out for a couple of reasons but I have a PS3 which does 1080 for games and an htpc with 1080p mkvs, so that was that... though at my seating distance I supposedly would not have noticed a difference.

PiP is important to me, as far as being able to set my front door's camera feed in a corner, while watching TV.
