Perhaps they should tell software developers. Still, many apps are Classic-only or hybrid 9/X and most of the current software for Mac OS X are hacks.

They're not going to post it. It's supposedly under NDA.

Can someone make a QuickTime out of that news.com video (using Snapz Pro, etc.)?

Quit *****ing about the format and download a player for God's sake.

It's worth it - the video is funny as hell. Boy, talk about a way to make a statement.

Apple doesn't read these message boards. If you have a complaint or suggestion for OS X send feedback where it will do some good.

ha ha ha ha ha!! That was bloody great!

We all realize had this been MS saying goodbye to one of their older systems, Balmer would have come on the stage jumping up and down, sweat flying everywhere and yelling: "Die! Die! Die!"

I thought OS 9 came out October of 1999. If so, why does it say RIP 1998-2002?????

Open IE and then go and view it.

As for Windows Media Player, I think it looks nice in the browser and works just fine. Of course I would prefer QuickTime anyday.

And yes, I am glad that Apple has finally moved to 100% Mac OS X.

(BTW, Mac OS 9 came out in October, 1998 not 1999).

Here are the links to the direct streams (sans plugin or ads).
You'll need Windows Media Player installed.

I installed WMP for Mac OS X, and I still can't view the video... *sigh*

It claims it doesn't know how to handle the MIME type, and there is no WMP plugin for IE that I can find.

According to StepWise the Keynote is not covered under the NDA..so we might see a video on apple's site.

I get the same thing I think it said something or other about that "issue" when installing. You have to copy the link location open wimp, cmd u and paste the url in.

Unless it works normally for other people and I'm doing something wrong, in which case please tell

Yeah I was right... from MS's release note's page.. pretty lame.

Known Issues

Link issues when using MMS protocol
When using a Web browser, you may experience problems opening Web links to content that uses the Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol. You may need to manually enter the address to the content in Windows Media Player.

To play content that uses MMS, start Windows Media Player, and on the File menu, click Open URL, and then type the URL.
btw here's the link to the other new.com jaguar video which shows ichat, ink and other features in action. kinda neat:

http://video. cnet.com:80/cnet_news/template/asxg...

edit: shorten link name

There is a program on the PC called ASFrecorder that lets one record streaming Windows Media files.

ASF Recorder wont do mms streams (IMHO) so its of no use here...

Does anybody know another solution to this?

Thanks a lot,

Don't give up without even trying. I was able to rip it using ASF Recorder. The file ended up being 9.6meg.

FYI, it's pretty common for places to have their Windows Media Server set up to deliver HTTP streaming as a backup when MMS isn't possible.

(posted in the "Studying the news.com videos I noticed..." thread)

Silhouette = online buddy drawer (saw this in use in C|Net video)
Smiley = smilies (ditto)
Paper clip = attachment (obviously)
Long bubbles = ????
I sent in a suggestion that Apple engage in what I call "labeling buttons" (not that that would help identify anything in a crappy video though). My main critique of brushed metal apps is that they tend not to have text labels for buttons whose functions aren't obvious.

[edit, before someone tells me] However, if you don't like it, don't use it.

RE: the ichat video from this thread: http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ulti...&f=46&t=005948

Wait a minute...you take what you've seen from a horrible video, add in your own far fetched ideas, and immediately conclude that "This sucks."

I suppose my kneejerk reaction was unfair. I should have qualified my answer, "if this is the default and if Apple doesn't offer us the ability to change the default, this sucks (at least for this guy)".

I say this because Apple has been, of late, limiting the user's ability to choose font size in it's apps and Apple has been favoring applications that take up a huge amount of screen space. Just look at Sherlock or iTunes or a finder window--they are all screen hogs and sport large unchangeable fonts. Look at Apple's dock, which while scaleable, becomes somewhat useless at sizes less than 32 pixels. Look at the default icons in Cocoa toolbars. Apple doesn't even give developers a small icon or small font option in the toolbar API.

As for the second issue (unlabeled icons in the chat window). Apple has also opted to use icons instead of text of late. While using icons of my friends in chat might be cool when chatting with friends. I often chat with people I don't know except by their username. I often chat with people who use generic icons. Often a bunch of these people are in the same "room" at once. Perhaps there will be a label option I hope so.

I suppose my fear is that iChat was demonstrated in the manner in which it is supposed to be used. As demonstrated it had 2 huge windows that took up a significant portion of the screen. In my company we use chat as a way to talk interoffice, a quick walk around reveals that literally everyone keeps chat as a small unobtrusive window in a corner of the desktop.

I hope I'm wrong about the defaults, because I think built-in chat is cool and long overdue. Connecting it to a built in address book is a brilliant idea. Adding P-P would is glorious. I just want a few options to customize the thing the way I want. If Apple gives us an option to do this, great. I will happily take any criticism back, but I think we have real reasons to be gunshy.

If you remember way back to the the Developer Previews of OS X, Apple was not initially planning to give us many of the customization options/finder options we now consider a birthright. It was only by getting feedback from users who watched the fuzzy videos and studied the screenshots that the company found out what users actually wanted.

The iChat bubbles, et al...

Am I the only one who noticed on the iChat button bar the last icon that just obviously indicates a change in layout?

With info less the 24hrs old some of you need t just cool the jets.

Haven't you noticed? Chronic cynicism takes no skills, little energy, no education, and if you do it really well in poorly-lit coffee-houses, it gets you laid.
