Is there an OSX app similar to Doskey (Windows)

I found this very useful for repeating previously typed text ( ie for Google Search) or commands in Windows

I know about Terminal, I'm looking for something... ideally an app... that's as simple to use as Doskey ( which records keystrokes for ease of re-typing automatically)

Not sure I understand - DOSKEY is just command history for the terminal prompt in Windows, which OS X has always had. Or did someone reuse the name for something else that I'm not aware of?

DOSKEY, from memory, you ran it under Windows, and it recorded keystrokes, until you pressed the return key.

You accessed these lines by press F3 ?

Then chose, or scrolled up & down to select the phrase you wanted.

Not a "scroll through an endless list of text snippets" solution, but:

Text substitution is actually built into OS X. Check out the Text System Preference. You can type a specific abbreviation, and the system will expand it automatically to whatever you specified.

If you need more flexible or complex solutions, there's TypeIt4Me or, apparently, aText.

AFAIK, Doskey was only for the DOS command prompt. Are you looking for this functionality outside of a shell prompt?

Terminal has this functionality, either with using 'set -o vi' or using Bash as your shell.

Just to add, in bash there is also command line completion, where you start typing and hit the Tab key, it will either complete the command or will present you with a list of options. The more of a command or directory or file that you type, the better the completion works.

And if you're typing in the same thing, create a shell script, or an alias if its short enough.

Just to clarify, I don't wish to use Terminal at all, just looking for a simple standalone app.

I currently use a keylogger, which does what I want, but is not as simple a GUI as DOSKEY was.

ie F3, Up Arrow or Down Arrow....... that's all.

OK, sorry. Then Quicksilver might be what you want, although I'm not sure of its status - they main dev went to work for Google or something like that.

Its not 'just a launcher'.
