I've got an Athlon XP1800+ at work, and will (after tomorrow) have a 1GHz iMac at home.
iMac sits idle all day, and the Athlon sits idle all night.
I kind of feel like I wandered into a new world I had no idea of here... all these different teams to choose from... I need guidance.
Actually I did SETI a year or two ago, and I'm probably on a team roster somewhere with 6 units or something. I had a PII 300 at work I was using at the time - not exactly a speed demon.
So anyway, I thought I'd save myself an hour of looking around and just ask where some power is wanted/needed. You guys want me in SETI, F@H, or what? A couple of machines here at the Team's disposal. Nothing like the 30 odd machines I see people getting together in other threads here, but I'll give my 2. Every little bit helps, right?

Well I would vote for Folding@Home, because that is where we have an opportunity to make a significant impact. In the end though, just pick whatever you would be most comfortable with or would feel the best about supporting. Your help will be appreciated wherever it is given. All the projects are good ones. The important thing is to pick something that you would feel good about supporting, that means something to you.

How about the PC on SETI and the Mac on F@H.
We really need help in SETI...

I'd say put the athlon on f@h, and the mac on seti.
Athlons scream at everything, but macs do better on seti then f@h.
Or do both on one project. Your choice.

I stuck the Athlon on SETI, since I can have it running in the background constantly. Looks like F@H only runs when the screensaver is kicked in.
It only runs a spreadsheet, accounting app, and IE during the day. It's free to crunch away at night.
I'll get the iMac set up next week.

You might want to try the Folding@Home graphical or console apps instead of the screensaver. On the Athlon, I would recommend the console. Much faster and they run very well in the background. F@H is also very friendly, so it will always get out of the way of other apps, but will use any unused CPU cycles whenever available.
