Bizarre. This happened spontaneously a little while ago on one of the systems I support (running OS 10.2.6 with Classic properly installed). Classic starts, all appears well, completes the startup process and the Classic window disappears like it normally does. You'd think Classic is active... but it ain't. A peek at the Classic sys pref pane reveals that it's not running. Hmm, no WONDER all the OS 9 apps quit without any warning or error message. And nothing will make it work; even re-installing OS 9 will not make it work. Same thing every time-- Classic appears to boot normally then gives up the ghost without any indicators whatsoever. Tried logging in as root. NOW Classic boots and runs properly. So it's a user thing. I created a new user for the poor guy, trashed the old one, and all was well. What gives? Thank you.

Sometimes your default user gets slightly corrupted. Perhaps it's a preference file somewhere that got tweaked. I had a tiny issue with my regular admin user that was cured after I created a new user and then went back to my regular one. Thankfully small problems that would have been system wide otherwise are localized to a particular user in OS X.
