Actually it was in the 50s today. Very nice. But personally I don't like living here. Much rather be in the Pacific Northwest or Georgia.

So, Avatar has now surpassed The Dark Knight for domestic receipts, at over $550 billion, and is closing in on Titanic. I suspect Avatar will beat Titanic in both domestic ($0.60 billion) and worldwide ($1.84 billion) in February. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar becomes the first movie to hit $2 billion worldwide.

I would also guess we have a long wait until the Blu-ray goes on sale.

Finally saw it in Imax. I'm apparently flicker sensitive. The movie was sorta in 3D for me while everyone else was dodging shit left and right as it popped out at them. For all those "wow" moments the others were having, rather than see one image, I would see the individual images sent to each eye jumping back and forth.

What a waste.

Avatar has broken the $2 beeleeon mark. It is now within spitting distance of the $600 meeleeon domestic record as well, after 30 last weekend. It will break that record this week.

I'm not sure I'm the guy you want making it, but I do think we should differentiate between people who saw it one or multiple times, if only because the revenue would indicate repeat viewings, much like Titanic managed.

Meh, I really liked his star wars review but I feel that he was just grasping for straws with this one because it would get lots of attention. There are much worse movies out there.

To be fair, if you watch the whole thing he says he enjoyed the movie, but there were things about it that kept it from being great.

Great review. I think he hit the nail on the head, and it was funny. Yeah, there were a few stretches there for comic relief, but the gist of the review is something I agree with.

The story is extremely simplistic with 1-D characters and crappy dialogue, but it was otherwise extremely well designed and implemented, along with breathtaking visuals.

Yes I agree that the story and characters sucked but they never bothered me in his other movies before. Aliens, Abyss and even Titanic has some great characters and writing.

I think he was concentrating too much on the effects and techniques this time round.

I hope Avatar wins the Oscars for Visual Effects, Art Direction, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, and maybe even Cinematography... but that's all.

Cameron's ex-wife Bigelow has a good shot of taking the Best Picture and Best Director prizes, judging by all the hype. (I haven't seen The Hurt Locker as of yet. Maybe this weekend.)

I loved it, enjoyed maybe more than any other film this year (and I've seen most of them) and even I don't want to watch yet another stupid James Cameron woohoo!!! fest.

Winning the DGA award gives her an extremely high chance of taking home the Best Director Oscar.

Avatar is now closing in on $2.5 billion. Holy crap.

BTW, one of The Hurt Locker's boneheaded producers just shot himself in the foot. In clear violation of the Academy's rules, he emailed a whole bunch of people to ask them to vote for The Hurt Locker for Best Picture, and even went as far as to tell them how to submit their votes to make Avatar do worse.

The Hurt Locker may have destroyed its Best Picture chances - HitFix.com

BTW, some of the people he emailed apparently worked on other movies competing for the same Best Picture award. If true... What a frickin' moron.

Well, the bit with the monolith on the moon was pointless, and yes the closing sequences were too long. The movie really just needed a good editor.

Ah - you just never bothered actually trying to understand the storyline.

If the humans hadn't uncovered the sentinel on the moon, and it hadn't sent its signal to the gateway in orbit around Jupiter, how would the aliens have known their experiment had succeeded? And more importantly, what would have replaced the search for the recipient of the signal as a top-secret secondary mission goal that would drive HAL to psychosis and the elimination of the conflict by killing the crew?

The whole movie would have been pointless WITHOUT the moon monolith.

I haven't seen Avatar, but a friend has, and he liked the film but has an issue with the 'blue people' and Pandora.

'Blue people' are humanoid form, 2 arms, 2 legs. All the Pandoran animals in the film have 6 legs, so the 'blue people' aren't native of Pandora, they arrived there from somewhere else.

a) This is intentional and will form part of the story for Avatar 2 and 3.

or

b) The immersive world that JC worked so hard to create has a fundamental hole in it.

Ok, mammal type creatures, not insects/arachnid types. I can't think of a mammal that doesn't have 4 limbs, on Pandora the norm is 6 but blue people have 4. Pandoran species biology is to have 6 limbs, blue people aren't Pandoran.
