I'm convinced this would be a very simple procedure...has anyone been able to get their hands one one of the larger-capacity Toshiba drives and try it? The only stumbling block seems to be a lack of retailers carrying the 1.8" drives - are these being kept out of the market for end-users?

You also would need to find a way to format the drive with the original
iPod firmware. It's not just a bare drive, there's a specially formatted
partition with the iPod firmware and then another section for the actual
data so far as I understand it.

I think there is a format facility in iTunes or on the iPod itself.
I can't remember how, but my iPod has come up with the option of formatting the drive. It got selected.........
(Son was playing with it )

I suppose that could be tested by using Disk Utility to format the drive and then seeing what you get when you unplug and reinsert the iPod. I'm stuck using a PC here at work, so I can't test it...

Will the iBook hard drive fit into the iPod? I'm replacing my iBook drive and I would like to put it into my iPod (if that's possible ).

No. i- and TiBooks come with 2.5" drives. The hdd in iPods of all flavors is a 1.8" model.

You'd also have to make sure that the larger 1.8" drive would fit. If you look at the specs for the 5GB, 10GB and 20GB iPods you'll notice that the 20GB iPod is the thickest. This leads me to believe that the larger 1.8" drives are thicker than the smaller versions. Check the drive specs before shelling out money and busting open your iPod.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Ok... I'll just get a new iPod and put the 10GB drive (from the iBook) into a WiebTech enclosure. Thanks for the tips .

Once I thought that my iPod was messed up so I formatted it using disk utility. Then I had to use the ipod update "restore" function to get my ipod working again.

If you watch "The Screen Savers" on TechTV they have said several times that they are willing to try this but cannot find a source for the hard drives.
