I've just got a new 5.1 surround setup and decided to take advantage of my imac's optical out connector with the new setup. I connected it and it sounded great, but now the system volume is permanently disabled in tiger. it's stuck on full volume and i can only mute it but nothing in between! Is this normal? If so i don't think i'll be keeping the optical connection and will have to revert back to analogue which seems like such a waste.

Has anyone else managed to connect through the optical connection and still have the volume control active? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers.
Sunil

This is normal, because reducing volume on a digital connection reduces sound quality, whereas using the volume control on the amplifier/receiver does not. Use that volume control instead.
