I just got my new Linksys 802.11g wireless router. I am using an iBook with an Apple Airport card. I get good signal strenth, around 85 to 90% on the signal bar and I am crawling with my internet connections. Much much slower than a 56k modem.

I have tried changing the channel on the router a couple of times.

What can I do to get better speeds?

I do not have encryption turned on yet, when I do, will it slow it even more?

Are you sure it's not just a cable slow down? Try a speed test at DSLReports. Also move the router away from any cordless phones and your monitor.

I am using my other mac on the same wireless router through ethernet and it is running the same speeds (ok, small lie, it does feel slightly slower, but very slight)

I do have the wireless router on my desk above my monitor. Buy when I turn the monitor off completly, it my iBook's wireless is just as painfully slow.

Do cordless phone's put off signals even when they are not in use, thus causing this problem?

I can set my iBook on top of my wireless rounter and touch the side of my screen to one of the atnennas.

Still no difference.

Plus, IE seems faster than Safari when surfing wirelessly.

Regardless, painfully slow, much much much much slower than 56k modem.

Plug the iBook directly into the cable modem (no router). See if that changes things.

I tried hooking my iBook directly with an ethernet cable and it ran fine, nice and quick.

Been playing around with it all afternoon.

I reset all settings and reset the modem to factory settings.

Started fresh and now it seems to be running nice and fast.

I know I did everything right the first time, but who knows.

Thanks for all the help.

Now to figure out the WEP thing.

WEP is implemented in hardware. You should not see any appreciable difference in speed when you use it.

Well, what kind of connection are you using to the internet? If it' a modem, then thats you max bandwidth to the WAN (aka internet) your LAN speeds should be approx 11mbps

Oscar, I am using a cable modem.

Everything is running fine now.

Who knows what happened the first time around.

But now I am surfing in bed. Oh god this is so cool.

Thank you to everybody.
