Every time I get a new piece of technology, I see a newer model come out.

Has anyone heard of when they might release a beefed-up line of G5 desktops?

Or is this the kind of stuff that is protected by insider-trading laws?

Thanks!

Best estimates say next year.

Probably between Jan. and Mar., though. Though when they're actually shipped is another guess altogether.

Does this mean we would have to wait that long to get the widely available 16X SuperDrive? Does anyone agree than an 8X in an expensive 'PowerTower' is a bit ridiculous when cheapo PCs can be ordered with a 16X? If they are saving the 16X for their next revision (for a bit more wow factor upon release), then a 12X as a running change would be nice!

Is 16x blank media readily available yet? The fastest we sell in my store is 8x.

Better question yet, will 16x media be readable in home DVD players and most other computers?

Isn't there some issue with data transfer in Macs and 16x DVD burners? I vaguely remember reading something about it a month or 2 ago.

And how pricey is a 16X DVD? An 5 pack Apple 8x DVD-R is $14.95 at the Apple Store online. So would a 16X be $25-30?

I imagine it'll be after the current line is readily available.

16X media is almost impossible to get hold of so you'd be stuck with 8X speeds anyway.. Besides, burning 4,7 GB on a 8X drive don't take more than 10 minutes, so I really don't see the point yet.

I remember when I was considering updating my mac, I came upon a website that listed all the Mac products and when their release dates were and then based on this product cycle made recommendations on when the next new model would be due. Unfortunately I am have a old timers memory problem and I can't remember the site. If anyone can provide the link to this site I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

I just bought a new G5 so it's clear that new models will be shipping within the week. It's happened *every* time I've bought a new computer, sold stock, mortgaged a house, etc.

I also just bought a LaCie 16x DL DVD burner - and it came with some very specific software that I haven't loaded yet that will permit the Mac (and certain Mac aps - finder, DVD Studio Pro, iTunes and a few more) to support the DL.
