running 9.2.2 (happily).
i'll move to X with my next powerbook.

just upped my ram to 576mb. should i bump up the disk cache setting in the memory control panel?

the old rule-of-thumb was "32k per megabyte"...

worthwhile?

any thoughts??

thanx in advance!

I have a GB of memory, and set disk cache at 16096k. Can't remember why I chose this amount, but it works for me. VM is off, of course. I say try a custom setting, you can always go back to default if you don't like it.

Unless you're really sure what you're doing, leave it on auto. Actually, I think that the auto sets the cache to 32k/meg...

..which is why i was checking, since the cache didnt automatically change when i added ram (which shows up in "about this"...

thanks!

did you ever figure out the non increasing cache issue on your post ? I read your post and checked mine...... after increasing ram to 512, my cache is just 8160.... and I think based on the 32 rule it should be 16384....

hum! i might call the apple dealer that did the ram upgrade on monday

the old wive's tale is to set the cache for 32k for every megabyte...

just not sure how accurate that really is (or relevant to contempory ram sizes)

gonna set mine by that calculation & see how things go...

& will report back in a day or so

When I set my 8500 up I hit "Use Defaults" then turned off virtual memory. This put my disk cache to 4096k. I have 512mb of RAM. Should I see better performance if I set the disk cache higher?

i'm running mine at 32k per megabyte of ram...but not seeing any marked difference from the earlier default setting.

still, staying with the above measurement for now (unless someone comes up with a better idea...)

I suggest everybody set their cache to 8192K.

Don't make it too big, or it'll take longer to find the cached data (not much longer, but still...)

8192 is plenty. I set it as that with 704 megs of RAM.

BTW: Turn VM on to 1 meg, if you have it off.

How does having virtual memory on help?

some apps (like audio apps, like logic), require NO vm...
be sure about what you're running.

i can't feel any difference from my default (8160k) to bumping it up (a lot)

but cipher 13 knows his sh*t, so probably a good idea (again, with the vm issue to consider)

I always thought Vm was for people who didn't have enough RAM. Nowadays, 512MB of ram is plenty for most apps.

Unless the app specifially requires it, I say turn it off. Let it use real ram.

With VM on set to 1 meg, apps take up much let memory. check the get info box of an app and it tells you how much memory will be saved with VM on. The OS itself uses a lot less RAM with VM turned on.

yes but...

get more ram!
real ram is the way to go, and apps that don't work well with VM will be much happier...

(and ram is so cheap these days...)

Very true.

I have 704 megs of RAM (soon to be 1.2 GB), and I have VM off - but *only* because my HD space is at a premium right now.

Once I get a new hard drive, I will be putting my VM on and at 1 meg.

The reason for this is the *far* superior memory management this seems to enable; apps use less memory, there's less memory fragmentation, and things seem to run smoother/faster in general. Greater stability, also, I've noticed.

But, you're correct - some apps don't like it. Audio/Video apps especially. And yeah, some require it to be off

On all machines but those with over 640 megs of RAM I enable VM. I'll enable it on the others when they have more disk space.
