I'm setting up my daughter's older ibook and find that the system uses 30 mb of memory sometimes which leaves only around 30mb for other applications. How much memory should this system use and what can I do about it short of buying more memory?/

try turning on virtual memory. that will lower the system memory requirements. another thing you can do it go buy more ram. it is dirt cheap, so now is the best time.

$30-$40 for 256MB at dealram
