I was thinking about upgrading to a newer Apple TV. I guess I will wait and see if there will be an updated Apple TV supporting 4K output. I don't have a 4K set yet, but plan to get one eventually.

Apple is planning to unveil a renewed focus on the living room with an upgraded Apple TV set-top box that can stream 4K video and highlight live television content such as news and sports, according to people familiar with the matter.
The updated box, to be revealed alongside new iPhone and Apple Watch models at an event in September, will run a faster processor capable of streaming the higher-resolution 4K content, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t yet public. The 4K designation is a quality standard that showcases content at twice the resolution of 1080P high-definition video, meaning the clarity is often better for the viewer. Apple is also testing an updated version of its TV app, which first launched in 2016, that can aggregate programming from apps that already offer live streaming.

I'm in the same boat. I'm mostly looking for an updated remote, though - the current one appears to be a bit of hit and miss.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I'm in the wait and see camp; I have a 4K television but it has Chromecast built-in, so I can get by with my current AppleTV for AirPlay and use the built-in stuff for Netflix etc.

HDMI 2.0 supports 4K@60Hz. Most TVs only support that if using 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which (long story short) cuts the bandwidth requirements in half and technically only requires HDMI 1.4. Apple could easily deliver that for services like Netflix and its own movies and it would be a full-featured 4K video player.
Support for your own videos? VLC has an app for AppleTV4. If they update that with 4K support, it should work.
