Hey, didn't Apple sell the combo drives a while back for the original G4 PBs? It seems like you could send your PB to Apple and they would swap the original drive for the combo that they were selling. Anyone think they might eventually do this with the Superdrives?

I am quite happy with my 800 MHz that I bought earlier this spring, but I admit the one thing it lacks is the Superdrive. Of course, a 1 GHz processor would be nice too, but I will be happy to just remain jealous on that issue.

You could probably find the drive from third-party vendors. It should just swap right out. However, Apple's for sure not going to offer it, and upgrading to a SuperDrive will probably void your warranty.

MCE is now offering to upgrade the drives of all Ti Books to the new combo drive (the new 8x one, not the slower 2x original!), so I would expect that in 6 months or so they'll offer the upgrade to superdrives.

What do you mean with "not the slower 2x original"? The first combo in a Titanium was 8X, the same as the actual one in fact.

My bad, the combo drive I was thinking about was the one in the iBook. The original combo drive for the iBook was 4x and the new one MCE is offering is 8x.

I'm planning on getting both. My Dual-USB iBook is still fine for my modest needs, but when I got it there was a delay for the combo drive model - something like a month and a half vs. the CD-RW that shipped right away. I jumped on the lesser model to get it on the spot.

As for my Ti Book, I passed on Apple's original offer to upgrade and now regret it. I have the rev. 2 (Gigabit Ethernet) Ti667 with DVD but combo's are too cool to pass up, and better for eventual resale.
