I've been using the 5 star rating systems of iTunes and iPhoto a lot more lately and was thinking about what the ratings should mean.
In iPhoto I was thinking of using something like this:

0 - not rated
1 - bad quality delete
2 - poor image delete if space required
3 - keep
4 - put in web gallery
5 - print

Anyone have any input on how they use the rating system?
Nothing to see, move along.

I never use this feature; however, I like your idea and thoughts behind it. One suggestion, wouldn't your #1 (bad quality delete) not be needed since the user would probably just delete the file when they see its not good instead of marking with #1 first, and then going back to delete?!?

I like your idea also, I have only rated a couple pictures, and it's usually when looking at them in slideshows because the controls are right in front of me.

My ratings have been a little more subjective:

0- Meh. Don't hate it, don't love it.
1 - Could I have taken a worse shot?
2 - Don't' take pictures while drunk
3 - Well, if that stupid person wasn't walking there, this wouldn't be half bad.
4 - Wow. This doesn't suck. I might want to show this to someone.
5 - Piece o'art. I'm Ansel Adams.

I haven't gotten a good scheme for pictures, but this is how I rate my iTunes tracks.

0 - The jury's still out or haven't listened to it yet
1 - Don't like, don't want to listen to it
2 - Don't like it, but may eventually
3 - Good song, would listen to if I'm in the right mood.
4 - Great song, would listen to it almost any time orformer 5 stars that I've grown tired of.
5 - Could listen to this song anytime, anyplace, in any mood.

I was trying to get my wife to help with rating our images so I would need to come along and handle the deletion later.

I've noticed that I over rated a lot of my music collection. I always tried to move away from giving things which I actually liked a low rating like a 2 or a 3. But I see now that with a huge collection you have to be strict + only give 4 + 5 stars to your absolute best music.

I think someone should set up an anonymous service where people can upload their XML library from iTunes and it then lists the highest rated music. It could be called iRate.
Nothing to see, move along.

Interesting idea but things like that are so subjective, there would have to be a lot of participation to average out the 'I hate Linkin' Park' and 'I hate James Taylor' people so you'd get a fair representation. But that is an interesting idea...

There are two websites I know of that offer something like that: iTunes Registry and DailyTunes.
