I've had this problem for a while but it never bothered me really until now. What happens is in Mail, when I type an email it saves it to my draft folder while I'm still working on it. Thats great, but the icon next to the draft box says there are usually 2 or 3 drafts in there when in reality there is only one. Sending my email that I wrote makes that draft number go down to 1 but now there is 1 next to my draft icon when there is nothing in the draft folder.

Ok, I ignore it and it usually disappears in about a week...

Now I got an iphone (I don't know if it had anything to do with it) but now my Draft box shows about 30 "emails" in my draft box. When there is really NOTHING there. I tried repairing permissions, rebuilding mailbox, saving/deleting drafts.

Nothing happens. There is always constant 30 next to my drafts icon. Its driving me nuts.

What is up with mail box to dos. Doesn't make any sense and why do they have to be separated into mailboxes. It makes even less sense in iphone when they show up as emails instead of actual to do.

Oh and in addition,

the account that is showing these phantom messages is an IMAP account with my university.

Yea, it happens; Mail.app is a pretty poor mail client (buggy and feature starved). It gets even worse when you put your drafts/sent on an IMAP folder.

Yes, it's a known Mail issue. apparently, not everybody gets it though. It might have to do with the particular server configuration as well. That's just my theory though.

I think Mail is one of the best IMAP clients I've used (and I've used a lot - Thunderbird, Outlook, Mulberry, and more), but it does have some weird bugs and some annoyances (like *not* checking for folders for whom email comes in via Server rules).

Actually, I prefer Outlook 2003 to Mail 3.2 for IMAP. With a few well-hidden options set, it works great.

To address the bit about Mail Notes, notes are just HTML email messages given that funky stationary background, and the listing is simply a smart mailbox of messages with the notes x-header. This is why they have to be associated with a particular mailbox. This is a good thing, as when you check your account using a different client it may be handy to be able to retrieve your notes. Notes are not a part of the standard IMAP spec.
