Hi, since I upgraded to iPhone OS 3.1, my phone "crashed" twice while in sleep mode. Here's what happens: I use it normally, then when I don't need it anymore, I press the sleep button on the top then I put it in my pocket. When I need it again, the screen will stay black, no matter what I do. It seems dead. It won't do anything even if I press the top button for two minutes. The only way to cure it is to hard reset it by pressing Home and Power at the same time, then it will reboot normally.

I did a bit of research and it seems to be an old problem, dating back from 2007!

Any idea?

This is a known problem with 3.1. You can roll back to 3.0 unless you have a 3GS.

How does a bug like this sneak through in a closed system where there are only six possible platforms? I hope Apple will someday hire some decent Quality Assurance people in their software department.

How do you do that?

I just had this same thing happen to me the first time. Recently, I've been having my phone freeze upon restart after I've let the battery drain completely (usually due to being out for long periods of the day without access to an outlet to let my phone charge), but this morning, my phone battery was still practically full. I even plugged in my phone to see if maybe my phone is just having difficulty holding its charge.

I do hope this is a problem that gets fixed.

I'll have to look into it. I think I saw that at the Apple support forums.

I've been having the exact same problem. It's very frustrating. C'mon 3.1.1!!!

The only way to do is to jailbreak the phone. I must have missed that detail when I gazed the threads before.

Yeah, that's what I thought. So far I don't know of any 'regular' (read sanctioned) way to roll back iPhone OS.

I had this issue and took it to a genius bar. The genius immediately swapped my phone out for another 3G that runs 3.1. Since Saturday I have not experienced the problem again with this phone. He told me that not all phones have this issue with 3.1. I'm not sure what could be different between one handset and the next but whatever.

I reluctantly upgraded to 3.1 Friday but haven't had any problems. Phew.

I guess 3.1.2 is out now.
I have no lid upon my head. But if I did, you
could look iniside and see what's on my
mind.

Ya, supposedly 3.1.2 that came out today fixes this issue. Here's hoping.
