According to http://www.macsonly.com/, Amazon is offering a $50 Rebate on Mac OS X 10.2. This discount on Jaguar makes it $79 after the rebate if purchased between 7/29 and 9/03/02. The Amazon coupon may be found at http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006ANW9.01.RB02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

that is a good deal. I wonder how they're offering it for this low considering apple is being such a scrooge about it.

Time to bump this back up to the top.

Amazon has updated their site regarding Jag. The $50 rebate is now prominently displayed when you search the software store for "Jaguar". Net price is $79 with free shipping (if you go the slow ground option).

With all the bitching and moaning about Apple's pricing for Jag, this should help a little and bring Amazon a ton of orders. I know that's where I'm going to order my copy right now.

(Too bad they can't offer a rebate on .mac ).

i find it odd that the rebate link off the Amazon Jaguar page lists MacOS 10.1 and not 10.2, but the one that surfaced in these forums distinctly had 10.2 listed.
Amazon does say that Jagaur qualifies for the $50 rebate...and they better not go back on this....because I just ordered it.

Maybe I should cancel my order through the Apple Store and buy it at Amazon. How is Amazon doing this; are they just sucking up the $50 per copy loss? Maybe this is an indication that Apple is considering a rebate?

The Amazon site specifically says to mail the coupon to the manufacturer - is that Amazon in this case, or Apple?

Is Apple also offering a rebate? This seems too good to be true. I guess I should be canceling my preorder with Apple before this rebate disappears... (?)

Well, the rebate coupon that you mail in clearly says "Mac OS X 10.1" It says nothing about 10.2 being offered. With that said, I don't think that this rebate applies to Jaguar...

I dont think you guys realize when you plaster the deal everywhere you can, it does more harm than good because if amazon gets too much people taking advantage of it, they may actually lose more money than they would like. And before you know it, they pull the deal. I think similar has happened before.

The 10.1 rebate is a goof. MAcNN has posted the link to the real 10.2 coupon. You will also find it linked to in other threads (like mine about the best price for OSX).

I'm ordering it.

I have already ordered two copies through Apple at full price. I guess I should cancel at least one and buy from Amazon to get the rebate. Pretty stupid pet trick from Apple.

Bloomin typical, just been to the amazon.co.uk site and no sign off special offer on Jaguar or even Jaguar itself and the offer being talked about here is only applicable in the states.
Once again the rest of the world is left behind the states!

I do have to wonder what the story is on teh Amazon.com rebate. I'm not complaining mind you but how are they able to make the %$50 rebate work? I also noticed you can but the new version of Photoshop Elements for $49 after the rebate. The rebates come from Amazon and not Adobe or Apple so how can they afford to do this? It's like the good old days of dot com shopping when all shipping was free and everyone was selling everything below cost. Do they buy in such massive quantities that they they get some kind of insane discount on software that no one else can get?

I also noticed that 10.2 has gone from the 68th best seller on the day the rebate was announced to number one as of today.

Have you also noticed that Jaguar is more expensive from Apple in the UK as well. So not only do we not get a nice offer from Amazon but we also get dicked by Apple UK.

i emailed amazon yestedday about the flub up with the coupon. they emailed me with an apology and in it admitted that the coupon linked on the jaguar order page was indeed wrong (duh). they sent in the email a link to the new and correct coupon that lists jaguar on it.
it took less than a day. i was impressed with their feedback.

My condolences to the Brits looking for the offer at Amazon.co.uk, but I think it has to do with some international copyright issues because:

Notice on the Amazon.com site that it says

quote:
Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.

You can hope that the UK version of Jaguar will get some kind of special promotion from Amazon.co.uk -- they are probably the ones that have to make the decision with the product that they ship -- i.e., to take the loss or whatever it takes to offer such a price.

Current Amazon Sales Rank: 1.

I don't suppose that means it's the highest selling product out of every single thing they sell, but still, Apple might have a pretty good quarter after all. Cha-ching!

I went to the Amazon (USA) link today,no mention of a rebate,so they must have pulled the offer.
I downloaded and printed the coupon from the link posted here, but i doubt they will honor it. Must have had an overwhelming response!

Bitter, bitter, bitter.

I agree that the mail-in rebate is a PITA, it's better than not having the offer at all. I've redeemed dozens of them for CD-Rs from Price/Costco over the years. I guess the sellers are betting that you're too lazy, stupid, forgetful to actually send in the paperwork. I've gotten paid each time, but obviously it's not as easy as it could be. But as long as they're betting, I'm playing. Fifty bucks here, fifty there, and soon you're talking about espresso money :-)

Otherwise, they're probably looking at a class-action lawsuit that, given the publicity of this offer and the lack of an escape clause on the rebate form, they would most likely lose (and the lawyers win, but that's another matter). Besides, if you go to the rebate page for Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or some of the other products on that same form, Jaguar is still listed.

Rebate is now gone. It has even been removed from the downloadable rebate form. It's all over.
Hope that everyone who has already bought it will still get $50. back.

According to all the reports, Amazon will offer the rebate to everyone that ordered as of July 31 at 19:00 PST, when they took the offer down.

I wonder what kind of response they must have had to can that offer? It must have been considerable, I would guess for them to stop it so quickly.

Since Amazon is going to ship Jaguar when it is available, all the items will have the same ship date. So unless the ORDER date is on the slip and they cross reference your rebate to when you ordered it, how will they know if you ordered before July 31?

Need the coupon? http://www.dannann.net/pics/misc/jaguar-rebate.jpg

More than likely, they will never FILL the rebates (i.e.: pay us back). I guess I have a month to cancel my order or take my chances.

I am wondering...

Looking at the rebate form, how could Amazon justify not giving the rebate when it clearly states "purchased between 7/29/2002 and 9/3/2002".

There is absolutely no mention of "unless an announcement is made to a third-party source by an Amazon representative".

I am tempted to buy it and mail in the rebate. On the otherhand, this is such an underhanded move that I may just boycott Amazon altogether.

As far as broadcasting the deal to everyone, who cares? Amazon is not so stupid as to think that no one will tell others! This is the Internet, for Pete's sake (Pete?).

I think the received as many orders as they had planned on (first 1000, first 500, whatever) and then pulled the deal because THEY PLANNED IT!

We'll see come late August and 8 weeks later when people do or do not start receiving their rebates.

If I get screwed, so I paid $129 for OSX. Big deal. So did a lot of people.
