Good to hear, the Flash 5 in OS X is abysmally slow. On the other hand, some Flash games I play are slowed down enough that I have more time to make decisions. Like playing level 9 Tetris at level 1 speed.

I have just done a bit of testing. My fairly demanding personal site, www.hornetdesign.f2s.com runs like a dream on PC, so damn fast and smooth. In comparison, it sucks balls in OS9 flash5, and sucks dual balls in OSX
Flash 6 in OS9 is a dream come true. Suddenly my G4 466 is cutting up flash as fast as the P3 933's I test my site on (classified as 'nice' hardware for flash, IMO). In OSX, IE isn't as fast, but its a lot faster than OS9 flash5, not as fast as flash6 OS9. HOWEVER (this is big), Omniweb with flash 6 is AS FAST AS OS9 with flash 6!!!!
Omniweb is ripping up my site, as good as OS9 flash6, as good as a P3 933. IE X is good, not as good
Overall, ****ing good news for mac owners abroad

So, does this mean that the Flash 6 app will be good and not a typical Classic to Carbon hack?

Yes. I have worked with a beta of 6 and it's very smooth and stable compared to Flash 5 under OS 9. Hard to explain really, but something just feels more "solid." It'll be awesome.

I haven't seen this speed increase. And flash 6 even with beta 2 is still nowhere near as fast on a mac as it is on a PC. Flash 6 within Omniweb(the fastest OSX combo I've seen) is almost as fast as flash 5 on OS9.
It's interesting to note how much overhead the browsers seem to place on flash. Netscape 6 with flash is pathetic in OSX. IE is marginal and like I mentioned above flash in Omniweb is about as good as flash in OS9.
But all these combinations and comparisons are nowhere near as fast as a PC. I built a little site that had animation tied to music. I built it over a year ago in OS9. Everything was timed perfectly and it ran pretty consistent on all the macs I tested it on. Then I played it on the PC and the PC even average ones SMOKED the macs and totally finished the animation well before the music was done. This is pathetic!

Is a site where it is really noticeable. On the intro at the end the triangle shaped logo is supposed to bounce in at the end to the beat of the music. It does in OS9, it falls behind in OSX and it's way ahead of the music on a PeeCee.
Flash on a mac SUCKS!!!!! STILL!!!!

Maybe on your Performa
Flash6 player rocks. NOTE: this is not a version of flashplayer6 from macromedia's site.... this is the one included with the new flash6MX. Flash6MX is also a very nice app, it'll take a bit to get used to the GUI changes for me.

Good to know that the PC destroys the perfect syncing of audio and video that you made... because we all love it when our video and audio don't match up.

Hornet, I hope you are right. I sure hope the player that ships with the program will be up to snuff because the beta from macromedia's site is only a hair faster than version 5.
While I hope this is the case, somehow I doubt it. Why release a beta player that is inferior to one that's already working?
As a flash developer and a mac user I'm just extremely dissapointed with the performance of flash on the macintosh.

I haven't had the chance to try flash 6, but FWIW, the best combination for flash I've used yet was Opera beta 2 with flash 5 under OS9. I never tried the later Opera betas with flash, because I moved to OSX. Here's hoping they keep the performance gains through the final release.

Ok, just for sh*ts and giggles I booted into OS9. Downloaded the beta 6 player from macromedia's developer area and gave it a shot.
HOLY COW!!! Flash on OS9 is equivelant to the PC! I never thought I would see the day! Unfortunately I don't use OS9 anymore and haven't since 10.1 was released.... So, hopefully they can get X or more appropriately APPLE can get X up to speed!
Here's hoping....
BTW, I'm not on a Performa :-)

When my friend did the Binary Stars for network222 he originally had big AV synch problems between platforms. Fortunately, there are ways to fix problems like this.
It just takes a bit of effort.

Maybe their sites one == the betaMX one. All I know is its damn damn fast. So whatever you had before <> the one that ships with it. Cuz that one is fast
BTW, now that we are on the same level, the OSX one is in between flash5 OS9 and flash6 OS9 when in IE and standalone. HOWEVER, in specialised browsers, its just as fast as 9.
Happy? I sure am, flash6 player is ****ing great

Look, dude, the guy said that:

This is a good thing, right? We usually like to have our video and our audio timed perfectly, right? He then says:
Then I played it on the PC and the PC even average ones SMOKED the macs and totally finished the animation well before the music was done.
Oh my, the PC ran the video SO fast that it OUT ran the audio... So that means for a while in the flash movie the animation had halted and the music was still playing... And this is a good thing according to the developer, although he says that he "built a little site that had animation tied to music"... so to have the video finish before the audio is not an intended effect. See what I'm saying?
Flash isn't as good on Mac? Shut up. As long as I can watch Flash movies I'm happy. QuickTime isn't as good on PCs, so?

I dunno about r2...
FlashMX is the name for Flash6 on mac. OSX and OS9. Macromedia is hush hush about it. If you know your street directory, you can find a place to give it a test drive, if you know what I mean

Macromedia discovered that you were using an illegal unreleased version of their software and they hacked your computer and disabled it. There are a couple of big Irish guys on their way to your house *right now* RUN MAN RUN!
Actually your problem is documented on page 12 of the Flash 6 MX manual under "last minute problems/suggestions/changes". Read up on it.....OH WAIT YOU CAN'T.
