I know iPod muggings are becoming commonplace, but this one horrified me more than most. Probably because it happened very close to where I live.

Jogger impaled

A jogger was impaled on a fence post by a mugger who then stole her iPod in Tufnell Park on Sunday.

The 28-year-old was on an early morning jog when she noticed three youths following her.

One of the youths jogged up to her. The victim thought he would pass her but he pushed her over. She fell against a fence, and a spike went through her arm, pinning her to the fence, police said. The robber then snatched her iPod MP3 player and fled.

The victim was freed by ambulance staff and taken to the Whittington Hospital where she was treated and discharged the same day.

A police spokesman said the jogger was fortunate not to suffer a major injury.

Wow, that's pretty harsh. Hope she's OK and manages to ID those guys. I'll make sure to conceal my iPod better when in NYC...or anywhere for that matter.

Maybe the next iPod revision could include a built-in Mace spray?

Ah, the iPod. A product that suffers from being too recognizable.

You'd think they could at least offer a set of black headphones. Those would be much harder for muggers to distinguish.
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

It's those white headphones. First thing I did when I got mine was to pick up a pair of fontopias.

Agreed. I can spot an iPod user with the white headphones a mile away. I've replaced mine with some black Sony EX-71s.

You do have to be somewhat careful about displaying popular phones (and the iPod) here as there have been problems with opportunistic street crime.

That looks like a handy garrote.

My Apple Earbuds are still in the packaging. In 10 years, I'm going to ebay them. bwahahahaha! I'll be RICH! RICH! I tell you!..

...maybe not, but hopefully I won't get mugged for my iPod.

I would rather have an iPod with a remote detonator. Some guy steals it, and when he gets far enough away that I'm out of the blast radius -- kaboom, it blows him to pieces. I'll take one for my car too, that blows up just the front-middle of the driver's seat (right in the crotch).

I haven't heard of that happening. But anyone who leaves an iPod (or anything else of any worth - or even anything that looks like it might be worth anyway) in clear view in a car is practically asking for someone to walk off with it. Whenever I leave mine or my girlfriend's ipod in the car, I always make sure it's in the glove box or the boot. I don't even leave the cheap crappy tape adapter in view.

my brother's car was broken into and they stole his iPod, stereo face plate, and his watch he got from our dad. we do live in a bad neighborhood, but i do think my brother is an idiot for leaving that stuff in his truck.

and he still hasn't learned his lesson, he left his sunglasses in my mom's car in plain sight. what an idiot.
