Hey guys. new here. thought i'd share and get something off my chest. I bought my computer earlier this year on an impulse. I've been obsessing on whether or not I got a good value, if my money was well spent, and if I got most bang for my buck. I would have loved to been able to buy a G5 but for a about $1,100 ... this is what i got

-Intel Pentium D DualCore CPU 2.80GHz (x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel~2793MHz)
-2048 MB
-WD SATA Hard Drive 250 GB, 300 MB/s, 8 MB Cache, 7200 RPM
-Nvidia GeForce 7300LE 512MB
-20" Dell 2007WFP 1680x1050 (32 bit) (60 Hz)
-XP Pro Media Center (I think this edition slows it down...mcrdsvc.exe using~150mb/idle)
-Photoshop CS2 (using~114mb/idle)

My old VAIO, r.i.p., (1GHz,256,integrated graphics) sometimes seems to run PS 3 more gracefully than this here Dell. could be the chipset.
anyways........
TEST:Running Processes: 58
Opened PSCS2 =97.4s .... then 62.8s, 63.2s ... closed PS and reopened ...68.2s, 62.7s

40.8s Under Rossetta Photoshop CS2, 2.16 ghz MBP 1 gig RAM.

Wow that's good even better that my old DC G5 2.0 ghz with PS CS2 and that was native. I hope CS3 is released soon along with some more speed improvements.

Correction..

I didn't follow the instruction correctly the first time, I didn't save the test image but instead i just dragged the pic straight from the site to photoshop. This time my MBP did alot faster than last time, half the time!

24 sec !! Rosetta Photoshop CS2

Or you can just open up Date and Time Preferences and turn on the seconds for the clock in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Hmm very interesting. My old box is faster in photoshop than my new box (both PC).

Old box - Dual 3Ghz Xeon with Hyperthreading enabled, 2gig DDR400, ATI X800XT-PE AGP - 29 seconds

New box - Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4Ghz, 2meg cache per core), 4gig DDR2-533, ATI X850XT-PE PCIE - 34 seconds

But pretty much for almost every other task, the new box is considerably faster. Just strange that photoshop is much stronger on the older Xeons.

20 seconds on a 2.66 MacPro with 3GB RAM using Photoshop 7.01.

In the background, activity viewer, mail,iCal, firefox, safari, Word, Backup and quicktime (streaming ESPN Boston) were all running. CPU usage went to 100% on all 4 cores.

Tried to open photoshop again but it won't start.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

i suppose no one will care about this benchmark, but i guess i can add it anyway, to make the G5 and CD owners prouder:

2 mins 14 secs.................. eMac 1.42Ghz, 256Mb Ram, Ati Radeon 9600 64MB, 39 GB free space on HDD. PS CS2 open, at the same time as Camino with one tab open, plus MSN mmessenger - 2 windows open. i will do it again with 768Mb Ram soon, just to see the power of RAM.

off a fresh restart i got 34.6 with nothing other than quicksilver open in the bg. amazing how 1.83 c2d is faster than my machine, i woulda thought that in this case higher clock speed wouldve been an advantage, guess i was wrong.

Why do people insist on running benchmarks with other applications open? Is it to buffer their scores in case they seem too slow ("it's that slow cuz I had twelve games running in t he background...") or is it to prove their Macs are so blazing fast?

Its believable since the Old Netburst Xeons with Hyperthreading were effectively Quad processors thanks to Hyperthreading.

My E6600 clocked at 3.2Ghz with 2GB ram takes 26secs.

G5 Quad with 4.5GB ram takes 16secs..

.
Could be HT, could also just be that photoshop filters are particularly well suited to netburst's quirks (low branch count would tend to favor netburst more than usual, for example, since it pays a heavy penalty for mispredicts). Core 2 is still doing better per-clock, it's just not quite making up for the 600MHz deficit like it usually does.

My memory came earlier than expected so I reran the test and got the exact same results (12.0 seconds). On the other hand, XBench reports an increase in memory speed from 111 to 138...
