There's lots of good rap out there.

Remember, most of what you see on MTV is the rap equivalent of Nickelback or P.O.D or whatever. Generic shiite.

Not really my preferred field, no, but I give respect where it's due.

ShortcutToMoncton: I was simply being mean to be mean. I understand good music when I hear it, no matter what genre, Country and Opra inclusive.
The only thing is that the majority of rap is very much the same, as with most genres, and sometimes it's important to challenge the norm by making fun of it.

don't forget the lyrics:

"blow away f**kin whitey!
call yo black enemies 'niggaz'
kill da f**kin faggots!
rape yo f**kin bitch and call her a ho-ah!"

Let's not toss around this emo tag lightly. Jawbreaker is emo, Jets to Brazil is emo. The thing the two bands have in common? Blake Schwarzenbach. You mention this dudes name around emo chicks and the panties slide off from excess moisture. It's amusing until the chick is your wife. And sitting next to Blake at the bar.

No! That ain't rap. It's more like beatbox, or perhaps break beats, which is really nifty BTW.

[Especially with me on it on the dance floor. ]

Their parents would like to formally apologize for raising an entire generation utterly bereft of any sense of irony. They're not sure how it happened, but they promise it won't happen again.

This is every nerd on a message board stroking his e-penis in an attempt to look more like a music elitist. Ever. We don't give a shit if you Sigur Ros or your Godspeed You Black Emporer! or whatever the hell you pretentious snobs are dick riding this week makes more advanced music that requires more skill to make. Just because it can be simple and repetitive doesn't make it any worse than whatever snobby shit you listen to.

amen. I REALLY dislike rap, but that's irrelevant what you said here holds a lot of water. One of my favorite bands was Dream Theater, who write extremely complex music - but I haven't like anything they have done in years because they forgot now to write good SONGS. I still like the Scorpions even though they are simple, they write good music.

Exactly. I have nothing against people who listen to complex music and enjoy it because it's complex. I enjoy rap, regardless of the fact that it's relatively simple (from a musical stand point, not lyrical). Good music is whatever the listener enjoys. Not whatever is the most complex or what pitchfork-media snobs love.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like apple-sauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
