Well? Ghost recon claims to run on these specs, but is unplayable really. Anything out there?

Maybe Quake III and Red Faction?
I've never played an OS X FPS game on anything other than a G4 based Mac. I'd recommend UT X, but the current preview 3 beta needs some work.

Well first buy a 512 MB RAM chip for your iBook so it will come up to 640 MB total. That will help.
And then go and get Quake III Arena and download the latest version, probably 1.3.1 something. You should get about 10 - 40 FPS, or more.

Quake3 with all the effects turned down is OK. That's about it.

There's a big difference between 10 and 40 fps!

I second that notion.
40 fps = smooth
10 fps = like, you can COUNT that fast

Be happy.

Get Marathon2 or Marathon Infinity and run it in Classic. Should be able to find them for $5 somewhere. Great games in their time, and still enjoyable. http://www.bungie.com/

I like that response, btw.
Anyway, go for the Quake series. People still play them a lot, there are tons of modifications for them, and they will run well on your computer. Other game companies like the Quake series so much, they tend to use the Quake game engine for their own games. If you really feel the need, you can download old games (like Marathon, it could be abandonware) and play them in Classic.
I'm sure you can also play games like Unreal Tournament and Red Faction is settings are not too high. Games like Medal of Honor and Jedi Knight II, I'm afraid, will suck.

If you were willing to run rtcw in os 9 at minimum quality it might work, ran ok on a pismo 400. Download the demo and try it.

That game sucked in Mac OS X 10.1 on my iBook 600 MHz with 384 MB RAM.

i liked NOLF's performance (on lowest setting) on my wife's iBook. Still, there's always classic mode Quake II....

You may also want to take a look at Alpeh One, a project descended from the Marathon 2 Engine by adding OpenGL supports in it.

Or you could always run Quake 2 in MacOSX. Fruitz of Dojo ported it quite some time ago, fairly well too:

The Action Quake 2 mod is gnarly fun if you can find it.

Return to castle wolfenstein wasn't too bad, averaged about 20FPS with some mods to the file .
