Is Mac OS 8 available for download anywhere? I could not believe that Apple would want to make money off of it (although possible)... some Macs still run 8....

No, I think the newest OS Apple has available for free download is STILL 7.5.3 (and also the 7.5.5 update). So if you have a computer from 1996 or later you technically have to buy an OS for it.

Ouch... I don't really understand why... OS 9 is what runs with OS X. Apple is pushing OS X lately, so I OS 8 is basically unsupported... oh, well....
Gotta find one on eBay I guess.

actual pricing for OS 8 on ebay is around 10 bucks, but try to get 8.5 (and the downloadable upgrade to 8.6); it´s far more stable and bug-cleaned than 8.0/8.1

Depends on what Macs he wants to run it on. For the 68040's, the latest they can run is 8.1.
