I was wondering if those of you who are running Microsoft Office on an Intel-based back could provide some feedback.

My main application I use is Word, and I am concerned about switching to a new Intel mac.

Do you find any differences using Word (or Excel, etc) on an Intel Mac vs a G4 or G5? Slower> Faster? No difference?

Thanks!

I had a quick play with it at my local Mac reseller; launching the app is noticeably slower, but once open it seems ok.

At MacWorld, when the Intel machines were announced, M$/MacBusinessUnit stated they were scheduled to release a free Intel updater in March.

When that happens, things should speed up significantly.

No, they didn't. And they never will:

I read that the next version of MS Office will be for existing platforms and only the one thereafter will be for Intel Macs.

Is it a major project for them or are they just being slow?

Read Microsoft's own FAQ about it which timmerk posted:

Q. Will the next version of Office run on both PowerPC-based Macs and Intel-based Macs?

A. Yes. The next version of Office for Mac will be a Universal application.

I just watched the QT version and indeed I misquoted quoted Roz Ho, The GM of the M$ MacBusiness Unit.

What I should have said (she said) is that "M$ is on track to deliver a Universal Binary version of Office and Messenger (free)... during March..."

No, she didn't say that. She said "M$ is on track to deliver a Universal Binary version of Office and Messenger." Period. She did not say this will be done in March. In March they will ship an update with Spotlight support in Entourage.

The only thing she says about updates is that they'll be releasing some updates "very soon" to "satisfy user requests" (sync services, spotlight support, etc.) and that those updates will be available in March.

The FAQ clearly states that since Office runs fine under Rossetta, so they won't bother re-releasing it as a universal binary.

I run it on my iMac (1.83 CD), and with the stock 512 RAM, it ran pretty sluggish, and loaded up in approx 30 seconds. Now with 1.5 gig RAM, it loads in about 5 secs, and it MUCH faster

Intel iMac 2.0Ghz, 1Gb Ram, takes longer to launch the app, but once open, it runs faster than my old sawtooth G4 (1.4Ghz) ran word natively. Certainly useable.

I'm running 2004 on my intel imac, and while it's a tiny but slow, it still runs fine by me.
