So, a couple of weeks ago I had this problem (and thanks to those that chipped in with advice):

http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-noteb...ood-click-bad/

The problem deteriorated, I would have to click up to a dozen times to get the "click" to register and finally the button stopped responding all together. External mice were no good since it seemed as though the computer was continuously receiving the signal that the button was being depressed even though the button physically moved up and down with no problems. Right click would work on my BT mouse, but no left click. The trackpad has always worked without any problems.

I followed an ifixit guide and removed the top case, pulled the connectors and replugged them in. Restarted and found the same situation as before. So, I need to limp along until next semester's loan disbursement when I will replace my until now rock solid 4 year old PB. My question is this, is it possible that the trackpad/button unit has failed only for the button. I could get a replacement upper case off of ebay and replace the whole thing, but I wanted to be sure I've narrowed down possible problems.

Thanks to all

It's one unit and one connection. You need to replace the top case.
