How can I retrieve my contacts from address book? I had to force quit it and when I opened it again all my 1114 contacts were gone! I never manually made a backup of address book, does the application do that automatically by itself? I am afraid to press "revert to address book backup" because I am afraid it will make the problem somehow worse.

I also got a message from Sync Alert saying: " Syncing with Address Book will change more than 5% of your Contacts on this computer" and then it shows "delete 1114 contacts" and asks if I want to "cancel sync" or "allow". I think I should say cancel, but I'm afraid to make the problem worse.

Does anybode know how I can retrieve my contacts? Many, many thanks!!!

The computer came up with the message itself, I wasn't trying to Sync it to anything. I guess it is syncing itself with Address Book and noticed that there are way more changes to be made than usual (delete 1114 messages), so I am asuming it wants to check with me if this is really correct - but I don't know for sure if this is why it's doing it.

No, I don't have time machine cause I'm still running version 10.4.11.

Do you need any more info?

MANY THANKS for the help, I really appreciate it, situation is dire!!!

Are you sure ?

It must have been trying to sync with SOMETHING.

When you go into AddressBook - Preferences - Accounts, is there anything checked ?

wow, yes, it says it to synchronize with other computers using .mac!

I didn't know, but I myself don't use .mac (I think).

And no, I don't have an iphone.

What does this mean then? The message is still there, haven't turned the computer off nor emptied the trashcan since the disaster.

thanks again!

If you don't use MobileMe what do you use? You can sync your data to you iPod.
In AB preferences>general you'll see "sync with" the list includes Yahoo!
So if you don't have a Yahoo account create one now (Free) wait for the returned email acknowledgement. This is the most simplest way I can think of... before doing anything go to your
User>Library>Applications Support>AddressBook & then alt+mouse-click hold & drag to desktop to copy your info.

I'm not no Tiger & can't remember if their was another way to back-up with I did find the app
MailCM to copy address from Mail to AB, also found a rebuild your AB but it's Panther Rebuild Apple Address Book — KnowIT
