Hey all adventurous OS 9.0.4 users!
Ok, Here's the deal, if after installing OS 9.0.4 and you find out that you CD Rom drive does not mount and CDs, here is the cure:
First, start by restarting your machine with you OS 9 cd in the drive (note: do not try and boot to the cd, just let the machine boot as normal). Now, your OS 9 cd SHOULD mount. Next, remove the Apple CD/DVD driver found in the prefences folder and place it in the trash. Finally, install just the Apple CD/DVD driver from the CD, found in the custom install under OS 9 then multimedia.
That is it! This SHOULD work, it did for me. I wish you good luck, and maybe next update this will not be a problem.

On any apple machine, with OEM CD-Drives (or apple friendly replacements) The computer will load a CD driver from any BOOTABLE cd to the system if there is a CD in the drive. This occurs before the Apple CD/DVD driver or CD-ROM Toolkit extention (CDT will generate a "another driver..." error) loads in the system booted from a hard drive.
This is a handy tip to know if your CD Driver becomes corrupted, and also is a handy test to know if you CD drive is shot, or if it is the drivers.

For some reason the cd/dvd driver is easily corrupted after/during a hang/crash. If you keep a virgin install of 9.0.4 (or whatever) on another partition you can always just copy accross IT or any other damaged system extension, (or even the finder) should the need arise, no need to go back to the install cd at all.
