Whilst using my iBook last night it suddenly displayed a grey screen I've never seen before. I restarted the machine it the screen keeps appearing at random points. I'm thinking this could be logic board problems and am dreading the thought

I've tried resetting the PRAM, etc but it still dies. Should I post a copy of the panic.log here? I don't really want to have to buy a MacBook but if that isn't recoverable I'll just have to.

Can you boot off another drive or the OS disc?

I haven't got another drive to boot off, I can load up the machine and use it but then it'll crash.

Sometimes it'll crash at the login screen, other times I can use the machine for sometime before the grey screen appears asking me to restart my machine.

It looks like your "com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2" preference list (plist) file is corrupt.
Have you recently installed an Apple update or a 3rd-party program that interfaces with your wireless AirPort card?

Try booting in safe mode holding down the Shift key when you boot. Does it panic now at the same point? Track down that Plist file, keeping in mind that the order Mac OS references plist files is first in your ~ (User)/Library, then /System/Library. Tinker in the /System folder only as a last resort. When you do locate that plist file, temporarily drag it out onto your desktop and take note of which Library folder it was in - then reboot. If it works, great -- if not, put it back in and continue troubleshooting.

Tried to track down the that file but couldn't find it so I decided to do a fresh install and it's still crashing with the same error. I think the it's time for it to be retired. I'll make do until Leopard is released and get a macbook then.

Guessing its a G4. I reckon the airport card has failed. If it has an 'optional card', pull it and test. If its the last one, the card is not so easily pulled. But I have seen them fail. More than once. Causing KPs.

it is an optional card. I actually turned wireless off and ran if via an ethernet cable and it still KP'd. I'll try removing the wireless card.

well after checking I don't appear to have a card I can pull out, it's built-in.

I didn't know they'd moved these, I don't really see the logic to it either considering they shortly discontinued the line. With my 1.2GHZ 12", it was under the keyboard, like all other iBooks.

found a thread on the macosxhints forum which points to alot of people having the same problem I'm having and it's a logic board replacement or just use the ibook without airport ever turned on.

Time to save for a new macbook in Jan

Well turned airport off and the iBook worked without crashing but it seems the ethernet port is buggered Tried several difference connections and it kept dropping the connection requiring me to re-insert the cable each time. It wouldn't be see bad if it didn't happen every 2 minutes

Time to start saving I think, I'll just go back to using our G3 iMac.
