Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure how he meant that. I know for myself though that no such gap exits.

I'm also skeptical about the usefulness of the iPad.

But, I have to admit that I didn't realize how useful my iPod touch would be until I bought one.

And every reviewer has positive things to say so far, some even calling it a potential laptop replacement, so I'd be willing to give the iPad a chance.

edit: To paraphrase Henry Ford, If I sold people what they wanted, I'd be selling faster horses.

After watching the PC Mag video of the iPad in action, I'm convinced that I will buy one. Now to see if I can somehow get work to buy it for me....

All glory to the hypnotoad.

I currently don't have much of a need for an iPad... between my iPhone and MacBook, I'm already rather portable.

That said... the plan now is to wait a few years and replace my aging MacBook with an iMac and an iPad.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Can the iPad actually have more than four items in its dock? All the Apple promo pics I see show four items in the dock and lots of empty space.

It can have 6.

How has Apple managed to have this so hyped up? It's a little ridiculous. CNN has had about 10 articles on the thing in the past 2 weeks. frequently as the lead story on thier front page. WTF? seriuosly?

If, in fact, the next big shift is the killing off of mouse/menu/window-based computing, then this iPad thingy is as big a deal as the original Macintosh was.

IOW, huge, but it won't really have hit home until in about ten years, when everybody else starts doing it too, except by then it will seem so logical and commonplace that nobody will remember what the hoopla was about back then.

I guess that’s as good a sign as any that I’ve been spending too much time at work this past week. I completely missed the launch of this thing, or any reference to it made anywhere. Wasn’t until tonight, when reading a thread on another board, that I realised it was available (well, theoretically available, but mostly sold out, I guess).

When did it launch, incidentally?

Right now there are 12 articles about the iPad right now on the CNN main page. That's a little ridiculous if you ask me, for a device that is little more than a large iPod touch.

It's certainly more similar to an iPod touch or iPhone than it is a MacBook. IE, still no visible file system, etc.

Oh geez, if that's all you see when you compare the iPad and a MBP, then you truly miss the forest for the trees.

If you like…in fifteen years, using a mouse and menus/windows will seem as arcane and be as limited to a niche audience as command-line interfacing is today.

Write it down if you like. It's not something I'd be terribly embarrassed to be wrong about, though I don't think I will.

Oh, btw:

I was wrong on the SIM slot - that little hole at the top of the iPad, next to the headphone port, is in fact the microphone.

However, Jobs is very clear about the iPad being sold unlocked and any international carrier's microSIM almost certainly "just working" (in the original presentation stream, around 14:55). So it must be trivial to replace the card.

It doesn't take a psychic to guess that in 15 years time windows and menus could be replaced by something else.

It does however take a psychic to lecture others on the certainty of that happening, as well as the cause of that entire development being a single device that went on sale yesterday.

In other words we still lack evidence for an accessible microSIM slot.

Gosh, how hard can it be for an early tester to post a pic?

There are no "early tester" 3G iPads.

Also, Jobs' word that any microSIM from any provider will work is pretty much the word of God as far as evidence is concerned.

I'll give you that, but if you seriously doubt the EXPLICIT comment that a user will be able to stick any provider's microSIM into the 3G iPad, then I suppose even page 25 of the users' manual won't convince you.

That's the thing. I know I'd have fun playing around with one. But I have no actual use for it. And right now I find $500 just for shits and giggles a tad too much.

I can see a lot of applications in my profession. A coworker got one and he's been showing off some of the apps that make the whole platform "make sense." But >$500 for something that "is useful" is not something I can justify right now. Maybe when there are more accessories on the market, particularly accessories that make the iPad easier to grip and less fragile if dropped, I might change my mind.
