hey i had a movie file that must have been corrupted and when i ran it in VLC is froze after about half a second, but it kinda froze up 98% of the system, i could drag windows but not actually do anything with them, not even the force quit window. Anyone any ideas how i could get out of this if it happened again or if its anywhere near being fixed?

Strange because this is what's happening with mine. MPlayer works fine but VLC would lock up after playing for about 5-10 seconds. It had worked just fine a few weeks before. Hmmm...I tried deleting the pref.list but it's still locking up.

Press Command-Alt-Esc and wait a few minutes. Finally the "Force Quit" window will appear. Choose vlc, wait a few minutes till it is selected, click "Force quit", wait a few minutes, confirm your command and wait another few minutes. vlc will quit.
I exaggerated a bit. All in all, this takes 2-5 minutes.

However, these lockups should be fixed in vlc 0.5.2. Do you use that version? If you do, you should send feedback (and your corrupted movie) to the developers.

It's not fixed in 0.5.2. And it's not a currupted movie either. It happens consistently when watching DVDs. You have to sit through till the end of the movie or pull the plug.

0.4.6 doesn't have this problem.

im in 0.5.0 i shall upgrade it in a minute, unfortunatly i deleted the movie last week, I think the movie was corrupted because i tried to run it through divx doctor 2 (in classic mode because the movie has a wma format soundtrack i believe ) and that also crashed about 10% into the bit after it does the striped progress bar. Also i re-downloaded the movie and it works fine now, but the old corrupt version crashed 3 times in a row. Now I have to run all my movies through divx doc first before risking a nasty crash

VLC 0.5.3 is out and the locking up problem seems to be fixed.

Yes, sorry about that. it seems we fixed the multichannel output in 0.5.2, but the fix then broke the output on USB stereo devices. It's hard to develop when you don't have all the hardware available
Have fun all, and keep those comments coming.
