I would not install Panther on a system that is giving you troubles. Why not just back up your stuff, format the hard drive, and do a clean install of Panther? It might take a few hours, but it is worth it in the long run, if you are going to keep that computer for a while.

I second that. It will run faster and give you far less problems.

And also, whether you end up doing a archive and install or a reformat, don't just dump all the prferences from your old user folder back into your new one.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of backing up and restore, do an Archive and Install. It will make sure the new system that is installed contains no trace of the old system (except for stuff in your user folder like preference files, etc. but those can be deleted easily enough). It's a clean enough install - you don't have to do a reformat, although sometimes it's nice to reformat because it does the best defragging job in town.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

well id rather not reformat because i have about 30 gig of data i'd have to backup, dont want t obuy another hard drive to back it up on and dont have a dvd burner so thats a heck of a lot of cd burning plus im not sure how much of it i want to keep etc, prolly be a week long job, i dont think its a problem with the preferences, just seems too serious to be that. Doesnt an archive/install replace everything in the system apart from your use dir which can only really cause problems with your prefs?
I mean its not a problem system seen as its ran flawlessly for a year and a half, its just maya certainly broke something the other day

Uh, you need some kind of backup system these days. You can get an external firewire hard drive for less than $100 that will do just fine.

I backup my entire system one a month, just in case.

Hard drives do fail. I have been lucky, but others have not.

ok check this out hehe tried to install panther after a backup (archive install) got an error in the log about it being unable to find NSalertbox or something in somewhere deep in the system folder within appkit or something. Oh and I/O error -5 i think when checking discks, so i restart and KAPOW osx seems to be working fine now amazing, think I'll try and install panther again in a bit.

ok so tried it again and erm archive/install failed haha then i restarted POW "?" mark folder, so ran the installer again and it just had reformat and "install macosx for the first time" so i chose that and well its working now at last and luckily all my old user files are stored in previous systems folder. But when i was starting up and maknig my accounts i was paranoid about my old home dir being in the same as my new one so i didnt want it overwritten so i changed my short user name. Now i want my old short name back so i've made a new admin account is it safe to delete the admin account osx made itself? and then move all my old files to this new one?
(seems my old files in the previous system folder have stop signs on and are owned by the user osx made and i cant view them unless i type my password, would this cause issues if i deleted the user?)

thanks in advance

Have you tired any of the "fix" solutions. I.E. repair disk permissions, boot into single user mode and run fsck. Here's how:

FSCK - File System Check

To start up in single-user mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (Apple) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.

When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.

How to Use fsck -y From the Command Line

Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
1. At the prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -y (NOTE, there is a space between the k and the -)
2. Press Return.

The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume <name of volume> appears to be OK."

If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -y " command until this message no longer appears. It is normal for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors.

3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
4. Press Return.

For Panther:

Type exactly what you see above your cursor "/sbin/fsck -y"
(If you have a Jounalized Volume - which is Panther's default - the command is "/sbin/fsck -y -f").

Always run it two consecutive times with an "OK" result. Type "reboot".

Do you have DiskWarrior? That fixed my system when it was pretty messed up one time. It's a good product.

An alternative to the permissions and fsck is to boot into your installation disk and under the File menu (I think) run disk utility and repair the disk and permissions from it and then reboot.

Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

doesnt that just fix messed up permissions in the default install files?
The main problem now is that i have 2 admin users, the one i made when i installed panther "jame2" and the one i want to use "jameshic" but all my files archived from my jag install are owned by "jame"2 and lots of the dir's have stop signs on them and i have to change the permissions and enter my password to use them and then do the same to files in thme like when i tried to reuse me itunes music folder.

Would deleting jame2 make all that users permissions become mine? or what?

I'll try fsck tomorrow too though
