The story is true. Not timelining but I seemed to see this film every year but that's great as it always reminds me about it. This film is an absolute classic and shows that such a simple concept can work so well.

Yes, a bit reckless but that will teach people for being up so early and walking the streets!

The engine noises and screeching are dubbed. It isn't a Ferrari, it's a Mercedes 450SEL. And the driver (the filmmaker) never exceeds 85 mph.

Wikipedia article about the film

The route taken in the film is 10.42 km long (6.48 mi). It takes the driver 7:57 to cover that distance, giving him an average speed of 78.64 km/h (48.86 mph).
According to recent claims by Claude Lelouch, he was driving his own Mercedes in the film, and later dubbed over the sound of a Ferrari 275GTB to give the impression of much higher speeds. Calculations made by several independent groups using the film show that the car never exceeds 140 km/h (85 mph), which seems to lend credence to his recent comments.

Hmm, found this. It looks as if he may have come close to 140 mph on one section of the "track":

The actual film is called Rendezvoux and the legend behind it and many of its copy cats is that Claude knew a friend who was a famous F1 driver at the time who drove the Ferrari at 5am in the morning with a camera strapepd on the front. After the film circulated for a while the authorities got it and Claude and asked if it was him driving, he admitted yes as he didnt want his F1 frind to get caught.
Later he become the pioneer and genious of Car chases as seen in flicks of today.

Many have tried to emulate this race and many have ended in spectacular resaults.
My fav being a japanese guy clocked over 300km in Japan with a cam on front and on taco.
He was fined and his car confiscated. the car was an F40.

I have been waiting for Hollywood to cash in on this for a while.
