The hold switch on the top locks the iPod so that the scroll wheel and buttons don't do anything. Switch it so that orange is showing to lock the buttons. You'll also see a lock icon in the top left of the iPod screen when the hold switch is on.

Just be sure you put your iPod to sleep (hold down the 'Play' button for about 4 seconds) before switching the hold button on.

That's not actually necessary.

i said the same thing to a friend who managed to drain her battery and was asking me 5000 questions on how to recharge it properly and if it was gonna be ok and if letting it run down wasn't the proper way how should she charge it and bla bla and i finally said "did you read the little packet that came with your ipod".... she said "lol no i never even touched that"

why is being ignorant of technology something to be proud of in society?

I wouldn't even think that would be necessary in this case. All you have to do is look at the device to see a switch labeled "hold".

Using Windows does not automatically mean you're stupid. Thinking that is a sign of idiocy in itself.

Back when I was a kid still using Minidisc players, I remember finding one day that my MD player was on and playing. I remembered putting on the hold switch, so I couldn't understand how it had happened. Later I was talking with my Mom and she said something like "I saw that your minidisc player was on "hold" and I figured you wouldn't want it on hold all night, so I flipped the switch." Yeah...

So in other words, who knows what they were thinking...
