Didn't see a thread for this yet. NeoOffice 2.1 was released today. Here's a feature comparison with Microsoft Office & OpenOffice.org.

Site is slammed, so here are the bittorrent links:

http://download.neooffice.org/neojav...PC.dmg.torrent
http://download.neooffice.org/neojav...el.dmg.torrent

And here's what's new from the last major release:
  • Based on OpenOffice.org 2.1 codebase
  • Support for writing ISO 26300 OpenDocument (aka OpenOffice.org 2.0) file formats
  • Support for Microsoft OpenXML Word document format
  • Support for Microsoft Excel VBA macros
  • Novell's Solver for Calc
  • Significant improvements in startup time
  • Support for Java 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.4
  • New database component
  • Enhanced sound support
  • Runs on Intel Macintoshes
  • Native Cocoa Open and Save dialogues
  • Most widgets (scrollbars, buttons, checkboxes) are now Aqua
  • New Finder icons and splash screen with a more Aqua appearance
  • The new Akua set of toolbar icons with a more Aqua appearance
  • Enhanced support for Mac OS X themes, such as those offered by ShapeShifter

It's still slow on my 2.66GHz MacPro with 3GB memory. Works great and looks decent. It's a kepper but not sure why it's not blazing fast...

Man, if it's slow on that machine, forget about it on my MacBook...

It's very usable on my 1.83 GHz MacBook, with 2 GB of memory. Just don't bother with the stock 512 MB.

Downloaded and put through some tests. It's good enough to use permanently. The only problem I have seen is the Media Player under the Tools menu. I can't close the player unless I force quit NeoOffice.

Nevertheless I have now deleted MS Office. The only MS software left is their media player.

Heh, I'm still rocking 512mb... I have been trying to save up for 2gb, but I may just settle with 1gb for now...

It's just barely usable on my 800MHz iBook G4. Don't you MacBook people complain!

I do recommend these memory reducing tips for everyone, no matter how much memory you have (I have 1.12GB). They sped things up nicely for me.

Is it slower on the same hardware than the previous major version, or are people just complaining that it's not any faster?

I've got a 1.83 GHz MBP with 512MB. It takes a while for NeoOffice to startup, but once there its just as quick and zippy as any other application that I've got on my Pro. However, regardless, I plan on installing 2GB in the next few weeks. After having the MBP for almost a year, its time to max out that memory.

I don't get what's going on with you Intel guys' Macs. My PowerBook 1.5Ghz w/768MBs is having no probs. It is a freakly unique model though. It does things like edit 1080p HD video and can render 16 threads at a time in modo when it shouldn't be able to.

It is a bit faster in some respects but generally it is not any slower than it was before on the same hardware.

Maybe I should rephrase my original complaint. It takes a long time to load (it's a 372MB file) but once up and running it's quick. I just thought it'd be screaming fast (like Nisus Writer Express).

It looks awesome for what it is. Going to download it now.

Looks really nice. And it launches instantly on my G5.

Oh it's certainly not slower. But it's not significantly faster as far as I've been able to tell.

Newegg's got Crucial 1 GB modules for $59.99 each. Regularly they are almost $80 each. I picked up 2 x 1GB modules, shipped to my door, for about $130. Can't beat that deal. Especially considering its Crucial memory.

Great suite. Looks even better after you scale down the toolbar buttons.

Runs fairly well for me on 2ghz macbook with 1gb ram, better than office 2004. Only problem, all of the menus are blanked out, so I can't change any settings at all.
